Airplane Turbulence: The Sky's Rockabye

The big idea

When an airplane bumps and jiggles in the sky, that's called turbulence. It isn't the plane breaking, it's just the air having bumps in it, like a road with little pebbles and dips.

Air moves at different speeds and temperatures, and where those different bits of air meet, they make invisible hills and dips. The plane rides over them, so you feel a gentle bounce.

Airplane wings are built to bend a little, on purpose, because bending is part of being strong. Pilots fly through bumpy air every day, and your seatbelt is just there to keep you comfy for the ride.

  1. What bumpy roads do you know that lead somewhere good?
  2. Why do you think a bendy thing can be stronger than a stiff one?

  4. Pilots ride bumps every day. What's something that seems scary but is really just normal?

Bendy Is Strong

About 10 minutes · a dry spaghetti · a ruler

You'll need

  • A piece of dry spaghetti (stiff)
  • A flexible plastic ruler or a green twig
  • Your two hands

What to do

  1. Gently try to bend the dry spaghetti, snap, stiff things break when pushed.
  2. Now bend the flexible ruler or a green twig, it curves and springs back.
  3. Wiggle the ruler like a wing riding bumps, it flexes and keeps going.
  4. That flexing is why airplane wings bend in turbulence: bending lets them ride the bumps instead of breaking.
Why it works: stiff things crack under a sudden push, but flexible things bend and spring back, absorbing the force. Airplane wings are designed to flex exactly this way, so turbulence just makes them wave gently. Bendiness is a kind of strength.

  • Bend a stiff stick versus a bendy one and feel why flexible is strong.

  • Watch a tall tree sway in wind without breaking, bending is its strength.
  • Feel a fan's uneven air with your hand, moving air really does have bumps.

Read this one aloud, slowly

A plane in bumpy air is really a cradle in motion, held on every side by the air, rocked gently as it rides along. When your bed feels too still tonight, remember that up in the sky, the air is rocking its passengers softly to sleep at five hundred miles an hour. Let yourself be rocked the same way. Breathe in slow… and out… gently swaying, held and easy, into sleep.
