Artemis II: Journey to the Moon and Back
The expanded guide to the Artemis II episode, the same calm story of four people looping the Moon, opened up into something you can wonder about and try together. Pick the age that fits your listener.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
Four people, Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy, are getting ready to ride a small ship called Orion all the way out to the Moon and back. They won't land this time. They'll loop around it, all the way behind, and come home.
The Moon is so far away that if you looked back at Earth from there, our whole planet would look small enough to hide behind your thumb. Every person you've ever met would be on that little blue dot.
Inside the ship there's no up or down, so the astronauts float. They sleep in soft bags tied to the wall, so they don't drift while they dream.
Wonder together
- If you could look back and see the whole Earth at once, what would you want to find first?
- There's no floor in space, so you float. What's the first thing you'd do if you could float around your room?
- You get one small bag for the whole trip. What would you put in it?
- The astronauts loop behind the Moon, the side we never see from home. What do you think is over there?
- Who would you wave to from space, even if they couldn't see you wave back?

Hide the Whole World
You'll need
- Your thumb
- Something far away (the Moon, a streetlight, or a tree down the block)
What to do
- Find something far away out the window, the Moon if it's out, or a distant light.
- Stretch your arm all the way out and hold up your thumb.
- Close one eye and cover that faraway thing with your thumb. It fits!
- Now cover something close, like a toy across the room. Your thumb can't hide it. Far-away things look tiny, even when they're huge.

- Our round neighbor in the sky. Orion flies out to loop around it.

- A person whose job is to travel and work in space.
- Orion
- The little ship that carries the crew, keeps them warm, and brings them home.
- Floating
- In space there's no floor to hold you down, so everything drifts gently in the air.
- Earth
- Our home planet. From the Moon it looks like a small blue marble.
Spot it in real life
- Find the Moon in the sky, day or night. That's where the crew is headed, a very long way up.
- Drop a soft toy and watch it fall. On Orion, it wouldn't fall, it would float and wait right where you left it.
- Look at a globe or a map and put your finger on your town. From the Moon, your whole town is far too small to see.
- At bedtime, let your room be the capsule: dim, warm, quiet, and humming softly while you rest.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, four explorers are getting ready for the longest ride there is, all the way to the Moon and home again. Their little ship keeps them warm and holds them close. Your bed can hold you the very same way. Breathe in slowly… and let it go. The engines are quiet, the window is full of gentle blue light, and everyone is exactly where they belong. Crew to sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Artemis II sends four astronauts, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, on a wide loop out to the Moon and back: the first crew to travel that far since the Apollo missions ended in 1972. Jeremy Hansen is Canadian, so this will be the first time someone who isn't American travels toward the Moon. They don't land. They swing around the far side of the Moon and let its gravity help curve them home.
The clever part is the path, called a free-return trajectory. The ship aims just past the Moon, and the Moon's gravity bends its route around and back toward Earth, so even if the engines stayed off, the ship would still coast home. It's the safest way to make the trip.
From out there, Earth looks about four times wider than a full Moon looks to us, and there's no up or down at all. The mission's real job is to test every system, from air and heat to radio and seats, so the crew after them can land.
Wonder together
- The Moon's gravity bends Orion's path around and home. Where else have you seen something curve because it was pulled?
- Why is looping around safer than firing engines to stop and turn?
- If the ship left Earth going one speed, would it move faster or slower as it got close to the Moon?
- Astronauts train for years for a trip that lasts about ten days. Why practice so much for something so short?
- From the Moon, everyone you've ever known fits on one small dot. Does that make you feel small, or connected, or both?
Investigate it
Bend the Path
You'll need
- A round bowl or a curved pan
- A marble or a coin
- Optional: a heavier ball for the center
What to do
- Roll the marble straight across a flat table. It goes in a straight line, no pull, no curve.
- Now roll it around the inside rim of the bowl, aiming to the side, not the middle.
- Watch it curve around the low center and come back out the way it arced in. The bowl's slope is standing in for the Moon's gravity.
- Try aiming closer to the center, then farther out. Closer swings tighter; a wide pass barely bends, just like a spacecraft choosing how near to fly.

- A route aimed so the Moon's gravity curves the ship back to Earth even with the engines off.

- The pull every object with mass has on every other; the Moon's pull bends Orion's path.

- The half of the Moon that always faces away from Earth, not dark, just hidden from us.
- Crewed mission
- A spaceflight with people aboard, not just machines.
Spot it in real life
- Swing a ball on a string in a circle, then let go, it flies off straight. Gravity is the 'string' that keeps Orion curving instead of flying off.
- Watch water curve down a funnel or a sink: a wide, bending path around a low center, just like the free-return loop.
- Find the Moon over several nights and notice it moves against the stars. Orion has to aim where the Moon will be, not where it is.
- Look up how long light takes to reach the Moon, about 1.3 seconds. A radio call from the crew has that same tiny delay each way.

They don't have to steer every second. The path was aimed true from the start, and gravity carries the rest. You can let the day curve toward morning the same way. Nothing to hold. The route is set. Rest.

Pick the silliest words you can. The story stays true no matter what you choose: that's the science hiding inside the giggles. Fill in the blanks and watch it come alive.
Buckle up. a name the an animal is riding along with four real astronauts inside a spaceship called Orion. Their rocket stands taller than the Statue of Liberty and turns a color in the sunlight, because the Sun slowly toasts its foam blanket. Three, two, one, "a sound". Almost nine million pounds of power push them up, the giant rocket drops away, and everyone starts a silly action (ends in -ing), because in space there is no up and no down. Orion does not land on the Moon. It loops around the far side and lets the Moon's gravity sling it home. Out the window floats the whole a describing word Earth, small enough to hide behind a thumb, holding every person and every plate of a food there has ever been.

Make it a Family Science Night

- Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
- Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
Artemis II is a homecoming as much as a departure. Four people ride all the way out to the Moon, loop behind it, and turn back, and the thing they remember is not the Moon at all. It's the moment Earth rises over the gray lunar horizon: one small blue world, all our water, all our people, no borders and no lines. Children feel the adventure. Grown-ups tend to feel what the crew feels out there, that even when we live far apart, we belong to the same place. It's a good thought to fall asleep inside.
