Aurora: A Crown of Gentle Light

The expanded guide to the Aurora episode, the slow curtains of light the sky wears near the poles. Choose the age that fits your listener.

For ages 4–6

The big idea

Near the very top and bottom of the Earth, the sky sometimes glows with slow, shimmering curtains of light, green, pink, and purple, swaying like fabric in a gentle wind. These are the auroras, or the northern and southern lights.

They happen because the sun is always sending out a stream of tiny invisible bits. When those bits reach Earth, our planet's invisible magnetic shield guides them toward the poles.

Up high, those bits bump into the air and make it glow, a bit like how a nightlight glows. Different gases glow different colors: air's oxygen usually glows green, and other gases add blues and purples.

See the Invisible Shield

About 10 minutes · a magnet · iron filings or a compass

You'll need

  • A bar or fridge magnet
  • Iron filings on paper (or a small compass)
  • A steady surface

What to do

  1. Lay paper over a magnet and sprinkle iron filings on top (or move a compass slowly around the magnet).
  2. Watch the filings line up into curving arcs, or the compass needle swing, tracing invisible lines of force.
  3. Those looping lines are a magnetic field, just like the giant one around the Earth.
  4. Earth's version reaches into space and steers the sun's particles toward the poles, where they light up the sky.
Why it works: a magnet has an invisible field, and the filings reveal its curving shape. Earth is a giant magnet with a field that stretches far into space. It guides charged particles from the sun toward the north and south poles, which is exactly where the auroras appear.

Spot it in real life

  • Play with a magnet and a compass to feel an invisible field pushing and pulling.
  • Watch a curtain sway slowly in a breeze and imagine the aurora's gentle motion.
  • Look for green in a nightlight or glow-stick and picture oxygen glowing green up high.
  • Check an aurora forecast, on strong nights the lights reach farther from the poles than usual.

Read this one aloud, slowly

Picture the aurora tonight, a slow curtain of soft light swaying high over the top of the world, quieter than any wind. Let your breath sway with it, in… and out… gentle and unhurried. High above, the Earth's great invisible shield is doing all the watching, turning the sun's far-off storms into something calm and beautiful. You can let it. Breathe slow, and drift, and rest.

The plan

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
