Aurora: A Crown of Gentle Light

For ages 4–6
The big idea
Near the very top and bottom of the Earth, the sky sometimes glows with slow, shimmering curtains of light, green, pink, and purple, swaying like fabric in a gentle wind. These are the auroras, or the northern and southern lights.
They happen because the sun is always sending out a stream of tiny invisible bits. When those bits reach Earth, our planet's invisible magnetic shield guides them toward the poles.
Up high, those bits bump into the air and make it glow, a bit like how a nightlight glows. Different gases glow different colors: air's oxygen usually glows green, and other gases add blues and purples.

See the Invisible Shield
You'll need
- A bar or fridge magnet
- Iron filings on paper (or a small compass)
- A steady surface
What to do
- Lay paper over a magnet and sprinkle iron filings on top (or move a compass slowly around the magnet).
- Watch the filings line up into curving arcs, or the compass needle swing, tracing invisible lines of force.
- Those looping lines are a magnetic field, just like the giant one around the Earth.
- Earth's version reaches into space and steers the sun's particles toward the poles, where they light up the sky.

Picture the aurora tonight, a slow curtain of soft light swaying high over the top of the world, quieter than any wind. Let your breath sway with it, in… and out… gentle and unhurried. High above, the Earth's great invisible shield is doing all the watching, turning the sun's far-off storms into something calm and beautiful. You can let it. Breathe slow, and drift, and rest.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
The aurora is the visible result of the sun meeting Earth's magnetic field. The sun constantly streams out charged particles, the solar wind, and hurls out extra during solar storms. When they reach Earth, our magnetic field channels them toward the polar regions.
There, the particles crash into gases high in the atmosphere and excite them, and as those atoms settle back down, they release light. Oxygen typically glows green (and red, very high up), while nitrogen adds blues and purples, painting the moving curtains we see.
The whole show is a sign of protection: Earth's magnetosphere is an invisible shield that deflects most of the solar wind, keeping our atmosphere and us safe. The aurora is that shield at work, made briefly visible.

You'll need
- A strong bar magnet
- A small compass (or iron filings and paper)
- An open tabletop
What to do
- Move a compass slowly in a circle around the magnet and watch the needle always point along the field.
- Notice the field lines curve out of one end and loop into the other, densest near the poles of the magnet.
- With iron filings on paper over the magnet, tap gently and see those looping lines appear.
- Now picture Earth as this magnet: the field funnels solar particles down where the lines dive in, at the poles, which is where auroras glow.
