The big idea
Bats fly around in the dark of night without bumping into anything, and they do it with sound. They make little calls, too high for us to hear, and listen for the echoes that bounce back.
From those echoes, a bat builds a sound-picture of everything around it: the trees, the walls, and the tiny insects it likes to eat. It's like seeing with your ears.
Most bats eat insects or fruit, and they're wonderful helpers, one little bat can catch thousands of insects in a single night. They rest by hanging upside down, because their relaxed feet grip all on their own.

See with an Echo
You'll need
- A large room, hallway, or empty stairwell
- Your clapping hands
- Your ears and a little quiet
What to do
- Stand in a big, mostly empty space and clap once, sharply. Listen for the echo bouncing back.
- Now do the same in a small, cluttered room. Notice the echo is different, shorter, softer.
- Try facing a wall up close, then far away, and hear how the echo changes.
- You're doing what a bat does: reading the space around you by how the sound bounces back.

Read this one aloud, slowly
A bat's grip holds tightest when it's completely relaxed, its feet hang on all by themselves, needing no effort at all. Try it tonight: the more you let go, the better the night holds you. Hang up the day like a bat hangs up its wings. There's nothing to grip, nothing to squeeze. Breathe in slow… and out… loosening, softening, letting the dark hold you gently, all the way into sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Bats navigate and hunt in darkness using echolocation: they emit high-frequency calls (usually too high for human ears) and interpret the returning echoes to map their surroundings and locate prey with astonishing precision, mid-flight, in the dark.
They're ecological heroes. Insect-eating bats can catch thousands of insects a night, controlling pests, while fruit and nectar bats pollinate plants and spread seeds. A neighborhood's bats do quiet, essential work.
Their upside-down roosting is elegant engineering: a bat's foot tendons are arranged so that hanging is the default, gripping happens passively when the muscles relax. Holding on costs a resting bat no effort at all.

- Access to several rooms or spaces of different sizes
- A consistent sound (a clap or a clicker)
- A notebook
What to do
- In each space, make the same sharp sound and listen carefully to the echo.
- Rate each echo: how long it lasts, how loud it returns, how 'boomy' or 'dead' it sounds.
- Predict a space's size and emptiness from its echo, then check by looking.
- Try eyes closed: can you sense a wall approaching by how sound changes? You're echolocating, roughly.
