The big idea
A black hole is a place in space where gravity, the pull that holds you to the ground, is incredibly strong. So strong that once something falls in, it can't come back out.
It's called 'black' because not even light can escape it, and light is the fastest thing there is. With no light coming out, it looks like a round patch of pure dark against the stars.
Black holes aren't hungry monsters chasing things down. They just sit quietly, pulling on whatever drifts too close, from very, very far away. The nearest one is thousands of times farther than the stars you can see, so your bedroom is perfectly calm.

The Gravity Well
You'll need
- A stretchy cloth or a flexible sheet (or a large round bowl)
- A heavy ball for the center
- A marble or coin
What to do
- Stretch the cloth flat between hands or over a bowl, then set the heavy ball in the middle so it makes a dip.
- Roll a marble across the cloth near the dip and watch it curve toward the heavy ball.
- Roll it faster and it swings around; roll it slow and straight at the center and it falls in.
- The dip is standing in for gravity. A black hole makes a dip so deep and steep that anything crossing the edge can't roll back out.

- Look up at the stars and remember the nearest black hole is far beyond every one you can see.

The big idea
A black hole forms when a very massive star runs out of fuel and its core collapses under its own gravity, packing an enormous amount of matter into a tiny space. The result is a region where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape.
The boundary is called the event horizon. Cross it, and every possible path leads inward, even for light, which is why a black hole is truly black. It isn't a hole you fall through; it's a place where escape simply stops being possible.
Because no light comes out, we find black holes by their effects: stars that swing around an invisible partner, gas that heats and glows as it spirals in, and ripples in spacetime from black holes colliding. The nearest known one is over a thousand light-years away, unimaginably far from Earth.

You'll need
- A stretchy fabric or a large balloon cut open
- A heavy ball (an orange or a small weight)
- Several marbles
What to do
- Stretch the fabric taut (a few hands holding the edges, or a bowl rim) so it's flat.
- Place the heavy ball in the center; it sinks and curves the whole sheet, that's mass bending space.
- Roll marbles across at different speeds. Fast ones curve past; slower ones spiral inward.
- Now imagine the dip so steep-sided that its walls are vertical. Past that edge, every marble path points down. That edge is the event horizon.
