Caves: The Sculptures of Water
The expanded guide to the Caves episode, the patient rooms that water carves one drop at a time. Choose the age that fits your listener.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
Under some hills and mountains there are rooms that nobody built. They were carved out slowly by water, one drop at a time, over thousands and thousands of years.
Rainwater is a tiny bit sour, just enough to slowly dissolve certain soft rocks, like limestone. Drip by drip, the water hollows out passages and big open rooms in the dark.
Then the dripping water leaves behind tiny bits of stone. Little by little, those build icicle-shaped stone spikes: stalactites hanging from the ceiling, and stalagmites growing up from the floor to meet them.

- What would you whisper in a room carved by water?
- A stalagmite can take a hundred years to grow one inch. What's the most patient thing you can imagine?
- What's the darkest dark you've ever been in?
- If you found a room no one had ever seen, what would you name it?
- Deep in a cave it's the same cool temperature all year. What season would you miss most down there?
Let's try it
Grow a Stone Spike
You'll need
- Two jars, warm water, baking soda
- A length of wool yarn or string
- A plate, and patience
What to do
- With a grown-up, stir as much baking soda as will dissolve into two jars of warm water.
- Set the jars apart with a plate between them. Dangle a yarn 'bridge' with each end in a jar, sagging over the plate.
- The soaked yarn drips onto the plate. Leave it a few days, checking daily.
- Slowly a little stone spike grows down toward the plate, and a bump grows up from it, your own tiny stalactite and stalagmite.

- Watch an icicle form, drip by drip, a fast, frozen cousin of a stalactite.
- Notice hard white spots on a faucet or kettle, minerals left behind by dripping water.
- Cup your hands and whisper, then imagine that echo in a huge stone room.
- Feel how a basement or cellar stays cool all year, like the steady calm of a deep cave.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Caves are proof that the gentlest things, given enough time, can shape solid stone. Nothing down there is in a hurry. Nothing is asked of you tonight but one soft drop of rest after another. Breathe in slow… and out… drip… and rest… drip… and rest… letting the quiet build, drop by drop, patient as a cave, all the way until morning.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Most caves form in limestone. Rainwater picks up carbon dioxide from the air and soil, becoming a weak carbonic acid, and over thousands of years that mildly acidic water dissolves the rock along cracks, opening passages and vast rooms.
Once a cave is hollow, the same process runs in reverse to decorate it. Water seeping through the ceiling carries dissolved mineral; as each drop releases its carbon dioxide, it leaves a trace of calcite behind, building stalactites down from the ceiling and stalagmites up from the floor, often just a centimeter or two per century.
Deep caves are worlds apart: the temperature holds steady all year, no storm or season reaches them, and life there is pale, slow, and adapted to permanent dark.

- Water both carves caves and decorates them. How can the same process dissolve rock and then build it back?
- Formations grow a centimeter or two per century. What does it tell you about a cave that's full of tall spires?
- Deep caves stay one temperature all year. Why would being underground steady the climate like that?

Acid on Stone
You'll need
- A piece of blackboard chalk or a bit of limestone
- White vinegar in a cup
- A magnifier (optional)
What to do
- Drop a piece of chalk (which is calcium carbonate, like limestone) into vinegar.
- Watch closely: tiny bubbles fizz off the surface as the acid dissolves the stone.
- Leave it a while and see the chalk shrink and soften.
- Now imagine rainwater's much weaker acid doing this over thousands of years, that's how a whole cave is carved.

Spot it in real life
- Fizz chalk in vinegar to watch acid dissolve stone, the whole cave process, sped up.
- Find limescale on a kettle or tap, deposited mineral, a household stalactite in the making.
- Notice how deep basements and root cellars hold a steady cool temperature year-round.
- Look up a famous cave (Carlsbad, Mammoth) and how long its formations took to grow.
