Clouds: The Shape Water Borrows

The big idea
A cloud looks soft and solid, like you could sit on it, but it's really made of billions of tiny water droplets, so small that a million of them could fit inside a single raindrop.
Those droplets are light enough to float on rising air, the way dust floats in a sunbeam. So even though a big fluffy cloud can weigh as much as a hundred elephants, the warm air underneath holds it up.
Clouds form when invisible water vapor rises, cools, and gathers into droplets. And fog? Fog is just a cloud that came all the way down to visit the ground.

Let's try it
Fog in a Bottle
You'll need
- A clear plastic bottle with a cap
- Warm water
- An ice cube
What to do
- With a grown-up, pour a little warm water into the bottle and swirl it, then pour most of it out.
- Rest an ice cube on the open mouth of the bottle.
- Watch inside: warm, damp air rises, meets the cold, and a little cloud of fog appears.
- Squeeze and release the bottle and watch the fog puff and fade, a cloud you made yourself.

- Find animal or castle shapes in the clouds, and watch them slowly change.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Build one slow cloud in your mind tonight, soft and wide, big enough to hold every leftover thought from today. Set each thought gently on it, one by one, and let a calm wind carry the whole cloud away, out over the hills, growing smaller and softer. Breathe in slow… and out… lighter each time, until your mind is a clear, quiet sky, and you drift down into sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Clouds are made of countless tiny water droplets or ice crystals, each far too small to fall quickly. They form when moist air rises, expands, and cools until its water vapor condenses onto microscopic specks called condensation nuclei.
Though a typical cumulus cloud can hold water weighing as much as a hundred elephants, it still floats, because that water is spread across an enormous volume as minute droplets, and the whole cloud rides on air that is rising and slightly warmer than its surroundings.
Cloud shape tells a story: flat layers mean gently rising air, tall puffy towers mean strong updrafts, and wispy high clouds are made of ice. Fog is simply a cloud at ground level, formed when air cools right where you're standing.

Make a Cloud Form
You'll need
- A glass jar with warm water
- A metal lid or plate with ice
- A grown-up with one match (for the smoke)
What to do
- Put warm water in the jar and set an ice-topped lid on top; watch faint condensation begin.
- Have a grown-up drop in a puff of smoke from a just-blown-out match, then re-cover with the ice lid.
- Watch a much thicker cloud form now that the vapor has specks to condense on.
- Lift the lid and let it clear. You've shown that clouds need three things: moisture, cooling, and tiny particles.

- See your breath condense on a cold day, moist air cooling past saturation.
- Notice contrails behind planes, human-made clouds from engine moisture and particles.

Challenge: Over a day or two, sketch three different clouds you see and name each type (cumulus, stratus, cirrus). Note the weather that followed. Then complete the diagram, labeling how moist air rises, cools, and condenses into a cloud.
Journal: A cloud borrows a shape for a while, then lets it go. Write about something you're holding onto that you could let drift on, and how it might feel to release it.
