Grow a Salt Crystal
You'll need
- Warm water and lots of salt (or sugar)
- A jar and a string with a paperclip
- A pencil to hang the string
What to do
- With a grown-up, stir salt into warm water until no more will dissolve, making it super salty.
- Tie a string to a pencil, rest the pencil on the jar so the string hangs into the water.
- Put the jar somewhere calm and still, and don't bump it. Check each day.
- Watch tiny crystals grow on the string, slowly, into neat little cubes over several days.

A crystal is a solid whose atoms are arranged in a precise, repeating three-dimensional pattern called a lattice. That hidden order is what produces a crystal's flat faces and sharp, regular angles.
Crystals grow as atoms or molecules join the pattern one at a time. Growing conditions matter enormously: slow, calm, undisturbed growth lets atoms settle into near-perfect positions, making large, clear crystals; rapid growth traps flaws, giving small, cloudy ones.
The same rules span scales and materials: snowflakes (ice), table salt, quartz, and diamond are all crystals, their outer shapes echoing the atomic patterns within. Order at the tiniest scale becomes beauty you can hold.

You'll need
- A saturated warm salt (or sugar) solution
- Two shallow dishes
- A warm spot and a cool, still spot
What to do
- Make a saturated solution (grown-up helps), then pour some into two dishes.
- Put one dish somewhere warm and breezy to evaporate fast, and one somewhere cool and still to grow slowly.
- Check daily. Compare the crystals that form in each dish.
- The fast dish makes many small, rough crystals; the slow, still dish makes fewer, larger, clearer ones.
