Crystals: The Physics of Stillness

The big idea

A crystal is what you get when tiny building blocks called atoms line up in a neat, repeating pattern, again and again, until you can see the shape with your own eyes.

That's why crystals have such flat sides and sharp, tidy points, they're just those patterns, stacked very neatly. Salt grains, snowflakes, and even diamonds are all crystals.

Here's the secret: crystals grow best when things are calm and slow. Slow, quiet growing makes big, clear crystals. Hurrying makes small, cloudy ones. Stillness is what builds the most beautiful ones.

Let's try it

Grow a Salt Crystal

A few days to watch · a grown-up for hot water · salt

You'll need

  • Warm water and lots of salt (or sugar)
  • A jar and a string with a paperclip
  • A pencil to hang the string

What to do

  1. With a grown-up, stir salt into warm water until no more will dissolve, making it super salty.
  2. Tie a string to a pencil, rest the pencil on the jar so the string hangs into the water.
  3. Put the jar somewhere calm and still, and don't bump it. Check each day.
  4. Watch tiny crystals grow on the string, slowly, into neat little cubes over several days.
Why it works: as the water slowly cools and evaporates, the salt it can no longer hold comes out and stacks onto the string, atom by atom, into a repeating pattern, a crystal. The calmer and slower it grows, the clearer and more perfect the shape.

  • Look closely at salt or sugar grains and see their tiny, tidy shapes.
  • Catch a snowflake on dark cloth and find its six-sided crystal pattern.
  • Notice frost patterns on a cold window, crystals growing before your eyes.
  • Grow salt or sugar crystals on a string and watch stillness build them.

The secret is stillness: slow, calm growing makes big, clear, a color crystals, while hurrying makes small cloudy ones. Bit by bit the crystal grew, quietly a silly action (ends in -ing), until it was a a describing word shape that sparkled with a soft "a sound." a name grew a big number of them and lined them up beside a plate of a food.

  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
