Dolphins: Riding the Waves

The big idea
Every dolphin makes up its very own whistle, a special sound that means 'me.' It's like a name, but sung. Dolphins even call each other by their whistles, so a friend can say 'where are you?' across the water.
Dolphins live in the ocean but breathe air, like we do, so they can never fall fully asleep, they'd forget to come up for a breath. Instead, they rest one half of their brain at a time while the other half stays awake, keeping one eye open.
And in the dark, deep water where it's hard to see, dolphins 'see' with sound. They make little clicks, and when the clicks bounce back, they can tell what's out there. It's like flashlight made of sound.

Seeing with Sound
You'll need
- A soft blindfold or just closed eyes
- A helper
- A safe, clear space
What to do
- Stand in a clear, safe spot and gently close your eyes (or wear a soft blindfold).
- Make a short 'click' or clap and listen. Have your helper hold up a big pillow at different distances.
- Clap toward the pillow and listen for how the sound feels different when something is close in front of you.
- Notice you can sometimes sense the pillow is there without seeing it. Dolphins do this beautifully, using clicks to 'see' shapes in the dark water.

- Watch how you and a friend move together without talking, a tiny bit like a pod staying close.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Out in the sea tonight, the dolphins are resting the only way they can, one half at a time, one eye open, always ready to rise for a breath. But you get to do something they never can. You get to rest all the way, both halves at once, nothing to watch for. Let the left side of you go heavy… then the right… and sink gently down below the waves of the whole day. Your pod is near. You can let go completely. Rest.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Dolphins each invent a signature whistle early in life, a unique sound that works like a name. They use it to announce themselves and even copy another dolphin's whistle to 'call' that individual, something very few animals do.
Because dolphins are mammals that breathe air, they can't fully switch off to sleep, or they'd stop breathing. Instead they use unihemispheric sleep: one half of the brain sleeps while the other stays awake, often with the opposite eye open, so they keep surfacing to breathe and keep watch for the pod.
To navigate and hunt in dark or murky water, dolphins use echolocation. They send out rapid clicks, and when the clicks bounce off objects, they read the returning echoes, the delay tells distance, the pattern tells shape. They essentially see the ocean with sound.
Wonder together
- A dolphin can copy another's whistle to call it by name. Why would naming each other be so useful in a big, moving ocean?
- Half the brain sleeps while half stays awake. What jobs would you want your awake half to keep doing?
- Echoes come back sooner from close things and later from far things. How does that timing become a picture?
- Dolphins can't ever fully sleep. What does that trade them, and what does it protect?
- You can rest both halves at once tonight. What does your whole brain get to do that a dolphin's never can?

Echo Timing
You'll need
- A big flat wall, empty hall, or tunnel
- Your clap or voice
- Something soft to compare (a pillow)
What to do
- Stand facing a large wall and give one sharp clap. Listen for the echo returning.
- Step much farther back and clap again. The echo takes longer to come back, because sound had farther to travel.
- Now clap toward a soft pillow up close. The echo is faint; soft things absorb sound instead of bouncing it.
- You've just used the two clues a dolphin reads: how long the echo takes (distance) and how strong it comes back (size and hardness).

- Look up a dolphin signature-whistle recording and hear how each one is distinct enough to work as a name.
