The big idea
Inside the walls of your home runs a hidden highway made of copper wire. When you flip a switch, electricity travels along it and becomes light, or warmth, or a whirring motor.
Electricity is a gentle push passed along a wire, like a whisper passed down a long line of friends holding hands. Each tiny piece barely moves, but the push itself zooms along almost as fast as light.
That's why the light comes on the instant you flip the switch, the push reaches the bulb almost immediately. The copper carrying it may once have been ore deep inside a mountain.

You'll need
- A line of people holding hands (or a row of dominoes)
- A gentle squeeze to send
- A little space
What to do
- Stand in a line holding hands. One person gives the next a gentle hand-squeeze.
- Each person passes the squeeze to the next, as fast as they can.
- Notice: nobody moves down the line, but the squeeze travels all the way to the end quickly.
- That's electricity: the push zips along the wire, even though each tiny piece barely moves at all.

The big idea
Electricity in a wire is a flow of energy carried by electrons. When a circuit is complete, an electric field pushes on the free electrons in the metal, and they drift, passing energy along. The push (the field) travels near the speed of light, even though individual electrons creep along slowly.
Copper is the highway of choice because its atoms give up electrons easily, making it an excellent conductor. A switch simply opens or closes the loop; open, and the flow stops; closed, and energy reaches the bulb almost instantly.
That energy converts into whatever we need, light in a bulb, heat in a toaster, motion in a motor. The unglamorous copper doing the carrying was once ore, formed and buried in rock long before anyone strung it through a wall.

- Copper conducts well because its electrons are loosely held. Why do metals conduct while wood or plastic don't?

Build a Simple Circuit
You'll need
- A battery (AA or similar)
- A small flashlight bulb or LED
- Two short wires and a paperclip 'switch'
What to do
- With a grown-up, connect a wire from the battery to the bulb, and another wire from the bulb back to the battery, making a loop.
- The bulb lights, you've completed a circuit and the energy flows.
- Add a paperclip as a switch: break the loop and the light goes out; close it and it returns.
- Try a plastic ruler in the loop (no light) versus a metal spoon (light), testing conductors.
