The Bedtime Scientist

Episode guide

Where Your Feelings Live

Feelings are real events in the body: weather made of chemistry and heartbeat. This episode tours where they live, and why every one of them passes.

The science, gently

  • Emotions begin as signals between your brain and body; a racing heart can be excitement or worry wearing the same coat.
  • Naming a feeling out loud genuinely calms the brain's alarm centers.
  • Feelings are like weather: even the big storms move through and clear.

Wonder together

  • Where in your body does happy live? Where does worried sit?
  • What name would you give tonight's feeling, if it had one?
  • What is your favorite kind of inner weather?

Tonight's calm-down

Find tonight's feeling, give it a name, and give it a seat, like a guest who is allowed to stay but not to drive. Then breathe slowly for it. Guests calm down when the host does.
