The big idea
On summer evenings, fireflies blink their soft yellow-green lights over the grass, like tiny, slow lanterns floating in the dark.
Their glow is a special kind of light called 'cold light.' It's made by mixing chemicals inside their bodies, and it makes almost no heat at all, so it never burns.
Here's the patient part: a firefly spends most of its life underground, as a little larva, for a year or more, before it finally grows up and rises to glow for just a few short weeks.

What to do
- In the dark, make up your own 'flash pattern,' maybe two quick blinks, then a long one.
- Flash it across the room to your partner, who tries to blink the same pattern back.
- Take turns making patterns and answering them, just like fireflies find each other.
- Notice how a special, steady rhythm is easier to recognize than random blinks, that's how fireflies tell their own kind apart.

The big idea
A firefly's glow is bioluminescence, cold light made by a chemical reaction (luciferin reacting with oxygen, helped by the enzyme luciferase). It's remarkably efficient: almost all the energy becomes light, with virtually no wasted heat.
Fireflies use their light to communicate, mostly to find mates. Each species flashes a distinctive pattern and timing, a signal as specific as a name, and individuals answer matching flashes in the dark.
Most of a firefly's life is hidden and patient. It spends a year or more underground as a larva (often glowing faintly, and hunting small prey) before emerging as an adult to shine for only a few weeks, a long wait for a brief, luminous finale.

- Each person invents a distinct flash 'code' for a made-up firefly species (for example: two short, one long).
- In the dark, one flashes their code; the other answers only if it's their matching species.
- Mix in a wrong pattern and see how quickly you can tell it's 'another species.'
- Notice how timing and rhythm, not just brightness, carry the message.
