Fireworks: The Earth Painting the Sky

The expanded guide to the Fireworks episode, bits of earth ground into powder, lifted into the dark, and returned as color. Choose the age that fits your listener.

For ages 4–6

The big idea

Every firework starts as a bit of the earth, special powders, ground up fine, packed into a shell, and shot high into the dark night sky.

The beautiful colors come from metals. Different metals glow different colors when they burn: one metal glows red, another glows blue, another glows green. It's like painting the sky with fire.

You always see the bloom of color before you hear the boom, because light travels much faster than sound. The light reaches your eyes almost instantly; the sound takes a moment to catch up.

Wonder together

  1. If you could design one firework, what color and shape would it be?
  2. Why do you think everyone watches quietly, and then says 'ahh' all together?
  3. Where do you think the light goes when the sky turns dark again?
  4. The colors come from metals burning. Which color would you want to paint the sky with?
  5. Would you rather watch fireworks, or be the one who gets to set them off (safely)?

Let's try it

Colors from Metals

About 10 minutes · a grown-up · a gas stove and salt (adult only)

You'll need

  • A gas stove flame (grown-up only) or a video of a flame test
  • A pinch of table salt
  • Safe distance and adult supervision

What to do

  1. This one's for a grown-up to do, or to watch on a video: a flame test.
  2. A grown-up sprinkles a tiny bit of table salt into a gas flame from a safe distance.
  3. Watch the flame flash bright yellow-orange, that color comes from the sodium in the salt.
  4. Different metals make different colors, which is exactly how fireworks get their rainbow. (Always watch from a safe distance.)
Why it works: when a metal gets very hot, it glows a specific color, sodium glows yellow, copper glows blue-green, strontium glows red. Firework makers pack chosen metals into each shell to paint exactly the colors they want across the sky. It's chemistry, turned into a light show.

Spot it in real life

  • Watch fireworks and notice the bloom of color before the boom.
  • Count the seconds between the flash and the boom, sound lagging behind light.
  • Notice a gas flame turn orange when soup boils over, sodium glowing, like a mini firework.
  • Look for the different colors in a firework show and guess which metals made them.

Read this one aloud, slowly

Picture one slow firework tonight: rising quietly on your in-breath, blooming softly at the very top, and drifting down as gentle glitter on your out-breath. Rising… blooming… drifting down. Make each one slower than the last, the colors softer, the sky quieter, until the whole show in your mind fades to peaceful dark. Breathe in slow… and out… blooming, and drifting, into sleep.

A Silly Science Story

The Colors Hiding Inside the Bang

Pick the silliest words you can. The story stays true no matter what you choose: that's the science hiding inside the giggles. Fill in the blanks and watch it come alive.

a name the an animal tipped its head back to watch the fireworks, waving a a color glow stick. Every color up in the sky comes from a different metal tucked inside the firework like a secret: copper burns blue, strontium burns red, and barium burns green. Watch closely and you will see each flash before you hear it, because light zooms to your eyes far faster than sound can a silly action (ends in -ing) to your ears. Then, a heartbeat later, "a sound" rolls across the sky in one a describing word boom, and everyone says ooh as if they all just tasted the same a food.

Make it a Family Science Night

Tonight's experiment is even better shared. Turn it into a small event, nothing you don't already have, no pressure, just one other family and a calm hour.

The plan

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
