Fireworks: The Earth Painting the Sky

For ages 4–6
The big idea
Every firework starts as a bit of the earth, special powders, ground up fine, packed into a shell, and shot high into the dark night sky.
The beautiful colors come from metals. Different metals glow different colors when they burn: one metal glows red, another glows blue, another glows green. It's like painting the sky with fire.
You always see the bloom of color before you hear the boom, because light travels much faster than sound. The light reaches your eyes almost instantly; the sound takes a moment to catch up.

You'll need
- A gas stove flame (grown-up only) or a video of a flame test
- A pinch of table salt
- Safe distance and adult supervision
What to do
- This one's for a grown-up to do, or to watch on a video: a flame test.
- A grown-up sprinkles a tiny bit of table salt into a gas flame from a safe distance.
- Watch the flame flash bright yellow-orange, that color comes from the sodium in the salt.
- Different metals make different colors, which is exactly how fireworks get their rainbow. (Always watch from a safe distance.)

- Look for the different colors in a firework show and guess which metals made them.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Picture one slow firework tonight: rising quietly on your in-breath, blooming softly at the very top, and drifting down as gentle glitter on your out-breath. Rising… blooming… drifting down. Make each one slower than the last, the colors softer, the sky quieter, until the whole show in your mind fades to peaceful dark. Breathe in slow… and out… blooming, and drifting, into sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
A firework is applied chemistry. Inside the shell, a lifting charge launches it high, then a bursting charge scatters small pellets called stars. Each star contains metal compounds that, when they burn, glow a specific color.
The palette comes straight from the periodic table: strontium and lithium burn red, copper burns blue, barium burns green, sodium burns yellow, and mixtures make the rest. Firework designers choose metals like a painter chooses paints.
The bloom-then-boom timing is a physics lesson in the sky: light reaches you almost instantly, but sound travels roughly a kilometer every three seconds, so the bang always lags the flash by a gap you can count.

- Each color comes from a specific metal. Why do you think different elements glow different colors?
- A shell has a lifting charge and a bursting charge. Why does a firework need two separate 'explosions'?
- The boom lags the bloom. Could you use that gap to estimate how far away the fireworks are?

You'll need
- A grown-up with a gas flame
- Small pinches of safe salts (table salt; a copper-cleaner or salt substitute)
- Or a flame-test video, and notes
What to do
- With strict adult supervision (or via a video), observe a flame test: a tiny bit of a compound held in a flame.
- Table salt (sodium) flashes yellow-orange.
- A pinch of salt substitute (potassium) tints it lilac; copper compounds add blue-green.
- Record which element gave which color, you've built a firework color key.

So tonight, let the sky in your mind put on one slow, quiet firework: a single spark rising on your in-breath, blooming gently at the top into soft color, then drifting down as fading glitter on your out-breath. Slower each time, dimmer each time, until the last ember cools to peaceful dark. Breathe in, slow… and out, slower… rising, blooming, and drifting, all the way down into sleep.
