You'll need
- Two plastic syringes (no needles)
- A short piece of tubing to connect them, filled with water
- A small light object to lift
What to do
- Connect the two water-filled syringes with the tubing, so pushing one moves the other.
- Push the plunger on your syringe and watch the far plunger move all by itself, the push traveled through the water.
- Rest a light object on the far plunger and press again, you're lifting it from a distance.
- Notice you can lift with a gentle, steady push. That's hydraulics, the garbage truck's superpower.

The big idea
A garbage truck's strength comes from hydraulics: force transmitted through an enclosed liquid. Because liquids barely compress, a push on one piston travels undiminished to another, and by using a larger output piston, a modest force becomes a powerful lift.
This is Pascal's principle at work. The same idea drives excavators, car brakes, and airplane controls: small, precise inputs producing large, controlled forces, smoothly and reliably.
Beyond the mechanics, the truck is one node in a large system. A single truck can handle the waste of hundreds of homes, and modern waste streams are increasingly sorted for recycling, composting, or energy recovery rather than simply buried.

What to do
- Connect the small and large water-filled syringes with tubing.
- Push the small plunger and watch the large one rise, slowly, but able to lift more.
- Then push the large one and feel how far, but how weakly, the small one moves.
- You've found the trade: push the small piston a long way to lift a big load a short way. Force up, distance down.
