The big idea
Inside almost every tiny cell of your body is a set of instructions for building you, a bit like a recipe. It's called DNA.
The amazing thing is that this whole recipe is written with just four letters, called A, T, C, and G, repeated in different orders, like a very long word made from only four kinds of letter.
You got half your recipe from each of your parents, which is why you might have a parent's eyes or smile. And here's a funny fact: you share a surprising amount of your recipe with all living things, even a banana!

See Real DNA
You'll need
- A strawberry in a zip bag
- Dish soap, salt, water, and cold rubbing alcohol (grown-up)
- A clear cup and a coffee filter
What to do
- Mash a strawberry in a bag. Mix a little dish soap and a pinch of salt into some water, and add it in; mash gently.
- Strain the mush through a coffee filter into a clear cup.
- With a grown-up, slowly pour cold rubbing alcohol down the side so it floats on top.
- Watch a cloudy, stringy layer appear where they meet, that's real strawberry DNA, clumped together enough to see.

The big idea
DNA is the molecule that stores the instructions for building and running a living thing. Its code uses just four 'letters', the bases A, T, C, and G, arranged in a long sequence and twisted into the famous double helix.
It's astonishingly compact. Stretched out, the DNA in a single one of your cells would be about two meters long, yet it's coiled to fit inside a microscopic nucleus, and copied into nearly every cell of your body.
You inherit half your DNA from each parent, which shuffles traits across generations. And because all life shares this same code, you share large fractions of your genes with other creatures, roughly half, by some measures, even with a banana, a sign of our deep common ancestry.

Extract and Ponder DNA
You'll need
- A strawberry or split peas
- Dish soap, salt, cold rubbing alcohol
- A bag, cup, coffee filter, skewer
What to do
- Make an extraction liquid: water with a little dish soap and a pinch of salt.
- Mash the fruit, mix in the liquid, and filter it into a cup.
- Slowly layer cold alcohol on top; a white, stringy DNA layer forms at the boundary.
- Gently spool the strands onto a skewer. Consider: this same kind of molecule carries your own recipe, and every living thing's.
