Hearing: The Science of Sound Waves and Ears

The expanded guide to the Hearing episode, following a whisper from a mouth to a tiny drum and into the mind. Choose the age that fits your listener.

For ages 4–6

The big idea

Every sound you hear is really moving air. When something makes a noise, it pushes the air into invisible ripples, like ripples spreading on a pond, and those ripples travel out to your ears.

Inside your ear is a tiny stretched skin called the eardrum. When the air ripples reach it, they make it wiggle, just a little. Three of the tiniest bones in your whole body pass that wiggle deeper inside.

From there, the signal travels to your brain, which turns all those little wiggles into the sounds you know: a voice, a song, the wind. Your ears never switch off, even while you sleep.

See a Sound Wiggle

About 10 minutes · a bowl · plastic wrap and rice

You'll need

  • A bowl with plastic wrap stretched tight over the top
  • A few grains of rice or salt on the wrap
  • A metal pot and spoon

What to do

  1. Stretch plastic wrap tightly over a bowl, like a drum skin, and sprinkle a few grains of rice on top.
  2. Hold a pot near the wrap and bang it with a spoon (not touching the wrap).
  3. Watch the rice jump, the sound's moving air is making the 'drum' wiggle.
  4. Bang louder and softer and see the rice jump more or less. That wiggle is what your eardrum does.
Why it works: sound is ripples of moving air, and they can make a stretched skin vibrate, so the rice hops. Your eardrum is a stretched skin just like this. When sound waves reach it, it wiggles, and tiny bones carry that wiggle inward for your brain to read.

Spot it in real life

  • Rest your fingers on your throat and hum, feel the buzz, that's sound being made.
  • Touch a speaker playing music and feel it vibrate, moving air you can feel.
  • Sprinkle rice on a wrap-covered bowl near a speaker and watch it dance.
  • Get very still and count how many different sounds you can hear, near and far.

Read this one aloud, slowly

Right now, without any effort, list the gentle sounds around you: the soft house, the moving air, your own slow breath. Your ears will keep their quiet watch all night, the way they always do, catching every ripple so you don't have to. They've never once needed your help. Breathe in slow… and out… and let the sounds of the night settle around you, soft and far away, as you drift into sleep.

A Silly Science Story

The Ripple That Became a Sound

Pick the silliest words you can. The story stays true no matter what you choose: that's the science hiding inside the giggles. Fill in the blanks and watch it come alive.

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
