When winter comes and food gets scarce, some animals do something amazing: they slow their whole bodies almost to a stop, and sleep through the cold months. It's called hibernation.
A hibernating animal turns itself down like a dimmer switch. Its heartbeat slows way, way down, its breathing gets very slow, and it doesn't feel hungry, because its body is barely using any energy.
Some animals, like bears, live all winter on the fat they stored up in autumn, without eating at all. When spring's warmth returns, they slowly wake back up, hungry and ready for the world again.

What to do
- Lie down and imagine your body has a big dimmer switch, turned up bright.
- Slowly 'turn it down': first soften your face, then your shoulders, then your hands.
- Now slow your breathing, a little slower with each breath, like an animal settling for winter.
- Feel how still and heavy you can become. You don't need winter's slowness, just tonight's.

The big idea
Hibernation is not ordinary sleep, it's a deep energy-saving state called torpor. An animal lowers its metabolism dramatically: heart rate, breathing, and even body temperature drop far below normal, so it burns very little fuel while food is scarce.
The effect can be extreme. A hibernating ground squirrel's heart can fall from hundreds of beats a minute to just a few, and its body can cool to near freezing. Bears take a lighter version, staying warmer but going months without eating, drinking, or fully waking, living entirely on autumn fat.
Getting ready is a whole strategy: animals fatten up, find a sheltered den, and time it all to the season. Coming out is gradual too, the body slowly rewarms and restarts before spring truly arrives.

Measure Your Resting Rate
You'll need
- A watch or phone timer
- A calm place to sit
- Paper to record
What to do
- Sit still and find your pulse (wrist or neck). Count the beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four, that's your resting heart rate.
- Now do ten jumping jacks and count again, much faster.
- Sit quietly, breathe slowly, and count once more as it settles back down.
- Notice how much your rate can change. A hibernating animal drops far, far lower than your calmest number, and holds it for months.
