Hippos: The Science of Sinking

The big idea
Hippos are big and heavy, so heavy that they don't float like most animals do. Instead of bobbing on top of the water, a hippo sinks, and that turns out to be their superpower.
Down on the river bottom, a hippo walks and gently bounces along in slow motion, a bit like an astronaut on the moon, pushing off and drifting with each big, soft step.
They can even nap in the water. A sleeping hippo rises up for a breath without fully waking, then sinks back down, all night long, without ever thinking about it.

Sink or Float
You'll need
- A bowl or tub of water
- A few small objects (a cork, a coin, a grape, a spoon)
- A towel
What to do
- Guess which objects will float and which will sink, then test each one.
- Notice that heavier-for-their-size things (like a coin) sink, while lighter ones (like a cork) float.
- A hippo is like the heavy, sinking ones, too dense to float, so it goes to the bottom.
- Push a sinking object gently along the bottom of the tub, that slow glide is the hippo's walk.

- Test which small objects sink or float and sort them into two groups.

Read this one aloud, slowly
Be heavy on purpose tonight, the way a hippo is. Let your arms sink into the mattress, then your legs, then your head, settling right down into the soft riverbed of your bed. Your breathing will rise up for air all on its own, just like the hippo's, without you doing a thing. Breathe in slow… and out… sinking, gently and completely, into deep and easy sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Hippos are so dense, so heavy for their volume, that they don't float. In the water they sink, then move by pushing off the bottom in slow, buoyant, low-gravity-looking strides, almost like an astronaut bouncing across the moon.
This suits their lives perfectly. Hippos spend the hot day in rivers and lakes to stay cool and shield their skin from the sun (their skin even secretes a reddish substance that acts as sunscreen and antiseptic).
They can also sleep underwater. A reflex lifts them to the surface to breathe and lets them sink again without fully waking, so a hippo can doze safely in the water through the day, breathing on autopilot.

You'll need
- A tall jar of water
- Objects of similar size but different weight (cork, wood, stone, metal)
- A kitchen scale (optional)
What to do
- Pick objects that are about the same size but different weights, and predict which sink.
- Test them: the denser (heavier-for-size) ones sink; lighter ones float.
- Weigh them if you can, and rank by density; connect density to sink-or-float.
- Push a dense, sunk object slowly along the jar's bottom, the water cushions the motion, just like a hippo's underwater stride.
