Moon Phases: Why the Moon Changes Shape

The big idea
The Moon looks like it changes shape, a big round circle one week, a thin curved sliver the next. But here's the secret: the Moon never really changes shape at all. It's always round.
The Moon doesn't make its own light. The Sun shines on it, and we only see the part that's lit up. As the Moon travels around the Earth, the Sun lights it from different sides, so we see different amounts of the bright part.
When we see the whole lit circle, that's a full Moon. When we see just a thin curve, that's a crescent. It's the same round Moon every night, just wearing a different amount of sunshine.

Make Your Own Moon
You'll need
- A ball or an orange
- A lamp or a flashlight
- A dim room
What to do
- Turn off most of the lights and shine the lamp from one side of the room, that's the Sun.
- Hold the ball out in front of you, that's the Moon. Notice only the side facing the lamp is lit.
- Slowly turn yourself in a circle, keeping the ball up. Watch the bright part you can see grow and shrink.
- There it is: a full 'moon' when the lit side faces you, a thin sliver when it's mostly turned away. The ball never changed, only the light you could see.

Whatever slice of Moon is out tonight, a full bright circle or the thinnest curve, it's the same whole Moon it always was, patient behind its shadow. You're whole in the dark too, even the quiet parts of you that don't show. Let your breath wax and wane like the Moon. Fuller… and thinner… fuller… and thinner… softer each time. The Moon keeps its slow round while you rest. Rest.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
The Moon doesn't glow on its own, it reflects sunlight. The Sun always lights up exactly half of the Moon, the half facing it. What changes, night to night, is how much of that lit half we can see from Earth as the Moon orbits us.
That orbit takes about twenty-nine and a half days from one new Moon to the next. Along the way we get the familiar cycle: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, then waning back down through gibbous, last quarter, and crescent to new again. 'Waxing' means the lit part is growing; 'waning' means it's shrinking.
One important thing: phases are not the Earth's shadow falling on the Moon, that's a lunar eclipse, which is rare. Phases are just our changing view of the Sun-lit half. And because the Moon spins once for each trip around Earth, the same face always points toward us; the far side isn't dark, just permanently turned away.

Model the Whole Cycle
You'll need
- A bright lamp with the shade off (the Sun)
- A ball on a pencil or stick (the Moon)
- Your head as the Earth
What to do
- Put the lamp in the middle of a dark room. Stand a few steps away holding the ball out at arm's length; your head is the Earth.
- Turn so the ball is between you and the lamp. The lit side faces away from you, that's a new Moon.
- Slowly rotate in place, keeping the ball up, and watch a crescent grow to a half, then to a full Moon when the lamp is behind you lighting the whole face.
- Keep turning and watch it wane back down. You've just run a full monthly cycle, and you can see the lit half never changed size, only your view of it did.

Spot it in real life
- Sketch the Moon each clear night for two weeks and label waxing or waning; you'll capture half the cycle.
- Notice a thin crescent sits near the Sun in the sky, low after sunset or before sunrise, that geometry is the phase.
- Use a lamp and a ball to prove to someone that phases aren't Earth's shadow.
- Check a Moon-phase app's date for the next full Moon and count roughly 29–30 days to the one after.
