Moon Phases: Why the Moon Changes Shape

The big idea

The Moon looks like it changes shape, a big round circle one week, a thin curved sliver the next. But here's the secret: the Moon never really changes shape at all. It's always round.

The Moon doesn't make its own light. The Sun shines on it, and we only see the part that's lit up. As the Moon travels around the Earth, the Sun lights it from different sides, so we see different amounts of the bright part.

When we see the whole lit circle, that's a full Moon. When we see just a thin curve, that's a crescent. It's the same round Moon every night, just wearing a different amount of sunshine.

Wonder together

  1. What shape is the Moon tonight? Can you find it and name it?
  2. The Moon has no light of its own. Where do you think all its glow comes from?
  3. If the Moon kept a diary, what do you think today's page would say?
  4. The same side of the Moon always faces us. What do you imagine is on the side we never see?
  5. People once counted months by the Moon. How would you use it to keep time?

Make Your Own Moon

About 10 minutes · a dim room · a ball and a lamp

You'll need

  • A ball or an orange
  • A lamp or a flashlight
  • A dim room

What to do

  1. Turn off most of the lights and shine the lamp from one side of the room, that's the Sun.
  2. Hold the ball out in front of you, that's the Moon. Notice only the side facing the lamp is lit.
  3. Slowly turn yourself in a circle, keeping the ball up. Watch the bright part you can see grow and shrink.
  4. There it is: a full 'moon' when the lit side faces you, a thin sliver when it's mostly turned away. The ball never changed, only the light you could see.
Why it works: the ball is always whole, just like the real Moon. As you turn, you see different amounts of its sunny side. That's exactly what makes the Moon's phases, not a changing Moon, just a changing view of the Sun's light on it.

Spot it in real life

  • Look for the Moon tonight and again in a few nights. Did the bright part grow or shrink?
  • Shine a flashlight on a ball from the side and see how only half lights up, always half, just like the Moon.
  • Find the Moon in the daytime sky sometimes; it's up more than you'd think.
  • Draw the Moon's shape once a night for a week and watch the pattern appear.

Read this one aloud, slowly

Whatever slice of Moon is out tonight, a full bright circle or the thinnest curve, it's the same whole Moon it always was, patient behind its shadow. You're whole in the dark too, even the quiet parts of you that don't show. Let your breath wax and wane like the Moon. Fuller… and thinner… fuller… and thinner… softer each time. The Moon keeps its slow round while you rest. Rest.

We only ever see the half the Sun is lighting, like a a color ball you shine a flashlight on while it keeps slowly a silly action (ends in -ing) around you. Some nights we catch a thin sliver, some nights a whole a describing word circle, sliding from nothing to full and back over about a month, like a a food that gets nibbled smaller and then is somehow whole again. Same Moon every night, just saying "a sound" with the light.

The plan

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
