Nebula Nurseries: How Stars Are Born

For ages 4–6
The big idea
Stars aren't always there, they get born, in enormous clouds of gas and dust floating in space. These clouds are called nebulas, and they're so big that light itself takes years to cross them.
Inside a nebula, gravity slowly pulls the gas and dust together into clumps. Over millions of years, a clump gathers more and more, growing thicker and warmer at its center.
When the center gets hot enough, it begins to shine, a brand-new star is born. Our own sun was born this way, in a nebula nursery, probably alongside thousands of star brothers and sisters.

Let's try it
Gather a Cloud
You'll need
- A blanket or large towel
- Lots of small soft things (cotton balls, socks, pompoms)
- Open floor space
What to do
- Scatter the soft things loosely across the blanket, like gas and dust spread through a nebula.
- Slowly gather the edges of the blanket, pulling everything toward the center, like gravity does.
- Watch the pieces bunch tighter and tighter into a dense clump in the middle.
- Imagine that clump growing hot enough to shine, that's how gravity slowly builds a star.

Read this one aloud, slowly
Nothing in a nebula hurries, not even falling, which can take a million years. You can fall asleep the nebula way tonight: a little more gathered, a little warmer, a little brighter in the middle, with every slow breath. No rushing, no effort, just a gentle drawing-together toward rest. Breathe in slow… and out… settling and warming, until you glow softly into sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Stars are born in nebulas, vast clouds of gas (mostly hydrogen) and dust, often light-years across and colder than almost anywhere. They're the raw material of stars, waiting.
Gravity slowly gathers the densest regions inward. As a clump collapses, it grows denser and hotter at its core over hundreds of thousands to millions of years. When the core reaches millions of degrees, hydrogen begins to fuse into helium, releasing energy, and the object ignites as a star.
Stars usually form in batches, so a single nebula can birth a whole cluster of siblings. Our own sun likely formed this way, among thousands of others that have long since drifted apart across the galaxy.

- A hand bicycle pump
- Your own two hands
- Optional: a spinning chair
What to do
- Pump a bike pump a few times with your thumb over the nozzle, then feel it, warm, because you squeezed the air.
- Rub your hands together fast and feel heat from compression and friction.
- Now imagine a cloud collapsing under gravity, squeezing its core the same way, but over millions of years.
- Bonus: on a spinning chair, pull your arms in and feel yourself speed up, collapsing clouds spin faster too, forming disks.
