Octopus: Three Hearts and No Bones
The expanded guide to the Octopus episode, the same calm science, opened up into something you can do together. Each lane has its own big idea, questions, a hands-on experiment, science words, and a printable to keep.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
An octopus is one of the most surprising animals in the whole sea. It has eight arms, and no bones anywhere in its body, not a single one.
Because it has no bones, an octopus is soft and squishy all over. It can squeeze its big soft body through a hole as small as a coin, as long as its hard little mouth fits through. Nothing gets stuck.
And it has a magic trick: it can change color. In less than a second, its skin can turn the color of a rock, or the sand, or a piece of coral, and it seems to vanish. It does this to hide, and to show how it feels.
Wonder together
- If you could change color like an octopus, what color would you turn when you're happy?

Let's try it
The No-Bones Squeeze
You'll need
- A soft, water-filled plastic bag (sealed well)
- A cardboard tube or a cup with the bottom removed (a grown-up's job)
- A hard ball or an egg, for comparing
What to do
- Try to push the hard ball through the tube. If it's bigger than the hole, it simply won't go.
- Now gently press the soft, squishy water bag against the same hole.
- Watch the soft bag change shape and slip through, as long as the opening is big enough.
- That's the octopus's trick: a soft body with no bones can pour through almost any gap. The only hard part of an octopus is its little beak.

Spot it in real life
- Squeeze a soft toy or beanbag through a small space. That softness is the octopus's superpower.
- Hold something up against different backgrounds and imagine it changing color to match each one.
- Wiggle all your fingers at once, then imagine each one could taste and grab on its own, that's an octopus arm.
- Watch how a cat pours itself into a box. A boneless octopus does that even better.

For ages 7–10
The big idea
The octopus is about as different from us as a clever animal can be, because our family trees split more than five hundred million years ago. It solved the puzzle of being smart in a completely separate way.
Start with the plumbing: an octopus has three hearts. Two pump blood through the gills to pick up oxygen, and one pumps it to the rest of the body. And the blood is blue, because it carries oxygen using copper, where ours uses iron.
Then there's the mind. An octopus has a central brain, but most of its nerve cells, more than half, are spread down its eight arms. Each arm can taste, feel, and begin to solve a problem partly on its own. And with no bones anywhere, only a small hard beak, the whole animal can pour through a gap no wider than a coin.
Wonder together
- Our intelligence and the octopus's grew on separate branches for half a billion years. What might that say about how many ways there are to be smart?
- Two hearts serve the gills and one serves the body. Why might an animal that breathes underwater need extra pumping power just for its gills?

The Thinking Hands Test
You'll need
- A pillowcase or cloth bag
- Five or six small objects (a coin, spoon, key, shell, button)
- A partner
What to do
- Have your partner secretly place the objects in the bag.
- Reach in without looking and name each object using only your hands, by feel alone.
- Notice how much your fingers can tell you, shape, edges, weight, texture, with no help from your eyes.
- Now imagine each finger could also taste, and could act on its own without checking with your brain first. That's closer to how an octopus arm explores the world.
Science words
- Hemocyanin
- The copper-based molecule that carries oxygen in an octopus's blood and turns it blue, where our iron-based hemoglobin turns ours red.
- Gills
- The organs that pull oxygen from water. Two of the octopus's three hearts serve them.
- Chromatophores
- Tiny bags of color in the skin that open or squeeze shut to change the octopus's color in an instant.
- Papillae
- Little bumps the octopus can raise or flatten to change its skin's texture, smooth or spiky, to match its surroundings.
- Distributed nervous system
- A mind spread out: an octopus keeps more than half its neurons in its arms, not its central brain.
- Invertebrate
- An animal with no backbone. The octopus is the cleverest invertebrate we know of.
Spot it in real life
- Feel a few objects with your eyes closed. The detail your skin gathers hints at how an octopus arm 'sees' by touch.
- Watch a video of an octopus changing color and texture at once, chromatophores for color, papillae for the spiky skin.
- Notice how a cuttlefish or squid ripples with color, they're close cousins using the same skin trick.
- Compare a clam (a shelled relative that stays put) with an octopus (its shell-less cousin that roams and problem-solves). Same family, opposite strategies.

Challenge: Do the touch test: identify objects by feel alone, and note how many your hands got right without looking. Then complete the diagram: label the three hearts, the gills, the beak, and the eight arms where most of the thinking happens.
Journal: The octopus thinks with its whole body, not just its head. Write about a time your body knew something, felt calm, or felt uneasy, before your thoughts caught up.
