Rainbows: Where Colors Wait

The expanded guide to the Rainbows episode, how white light hides every color and rain lets them show. Choose the age that fits your listener.

For ages 4–6

The big idea

Sunlight looks white or yellow, but it's actually hiding every color all mixed together. You just can't see them until something spreads them out.

Rain can do that. When sunlight shines into a falling raindrop, the light bends, bounces around inside, and comes back out, and as it bends, the colors fan apart, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Millions of raindrops doing this at once make the big arc we call a rainbow. You'll only see it when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front of you, so the light can bounce back to your eyes.

Wonder together

  1. The colors were hiding in the light the whole time. Where else do you think colors might be hiding?
  2. You need sun and rain at the same time. What two things that don't usually go together make something wonderful when they meet?
  3. The colors always line up in the same order. Which color do you look for first?
  4. If every raindrop bends light, why isn't the whole sky a rainbow all the time?
  5. What color would you add, if a rainbow could have one more?

Let's try it

Make a Rainbow Indoors

About 10 minutes · a sunny window · a glass of water

You'll need

  • A clear glass of water
  • A sunny windowsill
  • A sheet of white paper

What to do

  1. Set a full glass of water on a sunny windowsill so the sunlight shines through it.
  2. Put a sheet of white paper on the floor or table just past the glass.
  3. Slide the paper around until you catch a little band of rainbow colors where the light lands.
  4. Look closely: the water bent the sunlight and fanned out the colors, exactly the way a raindrop does in the sky.
Why it works: the glass of water is standing in for a giant raindrop. Light bends as it passes into and out of the water, and different colors bend by slightly different amounts, so they spread apart. That fanning-out is the whole secret of a rainbow.

Spot it in real life

  • Look for a rainbow when the sun comes out while it's still raining, with the sun at your back.
  • Find rainbows in a garden sprinkler, a hose mist, or a waterfall on a sunny day.
  • Spot the colors in a soap bubble or an old CD, light being sorted again.
  • After a bath, breathe on a cold window and watch light catch in the tiny droplets.

Read this one aloud, slowly

All the colors you love are still here in the dark of your room tonight, folded up inside the light, just waiting for morning to let them out. Nothing is missing. Nothing is lost. The red and the blue and the gold are only resting, the way you're resting now. Breathe in slow… and out… and let the colors wait quietly with you until the sun comes back to bend them open again.

The Colors That Were Hiding

Pick the silliest words you can. The story stays true no matter what you choose: that's the science hiding inside the giggles. Fill in the blanks and watch it come alive.

After the rain, a name the an animal looked up and gasped at a giant a describing word arc of color. Here is the secret: sunlight only looks white, but it is really hiding every color at once. When the sun shines into a raindrop, the light bends and bounces and fans out into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, always in that order. You can only see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front, so a name turned around, said "a sound," and there it was. Then a name spent the afternoon a silly action (ends in -ing) under a big number colors and dreaming of a color a food.

Make it a Family Science Night

Tonight's experiment is even better shared. Turn it into a small event, nothing you don't already have, no pressure, just one other family and a calm hour.

The plan

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
