Rainbows: Where Colors Wait
The expanded guide to the Rainbows episode, how white light hides every color and rain lets them show. Choose the age that fits your listener.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
Sunlight looks white or yellow, but it's actually hiding every color all mixed together. You just can't see them until something spreads them out.
Rain can do that. When sunlight shines into a falling raindrop, the light bends, bounces around inside, and comes back out, and as it bends, the colors fan apart, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.
Millions of raindrops doing this at once make the big arc we call a rainbow. You'll only see it when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front of you, so the light can bounce back to your eyes.
Wonder together
- The colors were hiding in the light the whole time. Where else do you think colors might be hiding?
- You need sun and rain at the same time. What two things that don't usually go together make something wonderful when they meet?
- The colors always line up in the same order. Which color do you look for first?
- If every raindrop bends light, why isn't the whole sky a rainbow all the time?

Make a Rainbow Indoors
You'll need
- A clear glass of water
- A sunny windowsill
- A sheet of white paper
What to do
- Set a full glass of water on a sunny windowsill so the sunlight shines through it.
- Put a sheet of white paper on the floor or table just past the glass.
- Slide the paper around until you catch a little band of rainbow colors where the light lands.
- Look closely: the water bent the sunlight and fanned out the colors, exactly the way a raindrop does in the sky.

Spot it in real life
- Look for a rainbow when the sun comes out while it's still raining, with the sun at your back.
- Find rainbows in a garden sprinkler, a hose mist, or a waterfall on a sunny day.
- Spot the colors in a soap bubble or an old CD, light being sorted again.
- After a bath, breathe on a cold window and watch light catch in the tiny droplets.
Read this one aloud, slowly
All the colors you love are still here in the dark of your room tonight, folded up inside the light, just waiting for morning to let them out. Nothing is missing. Nothing is lost. The red and the blue and the gold are only resting, the way you're resting now. Breathe in slow… and out… and let the colors wait quietly with you until the sun comes back to bend them open again.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
White sunlight is actually a blend of every color. Each color is light of a slightly different wavelength, and normally they all travel together, so the mix looks white.
When sunlight enters a raindrop, it slows and bends, a process called refraction. It bends again on the way out, and each color bends by a slightly different amount, so they separate. Much of the light also reflects once off the back of the drop, sending the sorted colors back toward you.
You see a rainbow only when the Sun is behind you and rain is ahead, with the colors arriving at a special angle, about 42 degrees from the point directly opposite the Sun. Because that angle depends on exactly where you stand, every person sees their own personal rainbow.
Wonder together
- Each color bends by a different amount. Why does that turn one white beam into a fan of colors?
- Red is always outside the main bow, violet inside. What does that tell you about how much each color bends?
- A rainbow forms about 42° from the point opposite the Sun. Why can't you ever reach the 'end' of a rainbow?
- Sometimes there's a fainter second rainbow with the colors reversed. What might cause that?
- If a friend stands beside you, are you seeing the same rainbow, or two different ones?

Split the Light
You'll need
- A shallow pan of water
- A small flat mirror
- Sunlight or a bright flashlight
- A white wall or card
What to do
- Fill a shallow pan with water and lean a mirror against the inside, half underwater, facing the light.
- Aim sunlight or a flashlight at the underwater part of the mirror.
- Tilt the mirror until a band of colors appears on a white wall or card above.
- You've just split white light into its spectrum: the water and mirror bent and reflected the light, fanning the colors apart, exactly what a raindrop does.

- The size of a light wave; each color has its own, and that sets how much it bends.
- Refraction
- The bending of light passing between air and water, which spreads the colors.
- Reflection
- Light bouncing off the back of a raindrop, sending the colors back toward you.
- Spectrum
- The full ordered set of colors hidden inside white light.
- Anti-solar point
- The spot directly opposite the Sun from you; a rainbow curves about 42° around it.
- Primary / secondary bow
- The bright main rainbow, and a fainter outer one with colors reversed.
Spot it in real life
- Stand with the Sun behind you and a hose mist ahead; move until the bow appears at that ~42° angle.
- Look for the reversed second bow above a bright rainbow, made by light bouncing twice inside the drops.
- Send light through a glass prism or the edge of a mirror in water and watch the spectrum appear.
- Notice the sky is brighter inside the bow than outside, extra light escapes at smaller angles.

So the rainbow you picture tonight was never added to the light, it was always inside it, waiting for a million raindrops to bend it open at just the right angle for your eyes alone. In the dark, the colors haven't gone anywhere. They're still folded in the light, resting, the way you are. Breathe in… and out… and let them wait with you, in perfect order, until the sun returns to sort them across the sky.

You can only see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front, so a name turned around, said "a sound," and there it was. - Set out the few things the experiment needs.
- Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
- Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
