Saturn is a giant planet with the most beautiful rings in the solar system. From far away the rings look like smooth, solid hoops, but they're not solid at all.
The rings are made of billions and billions of separate pieces of ice, from tiny specks like snowflakes to chunks as big as a house, all circling Saturn together.
Saturn itself is a gentle giant, huge, but so light for its size that if you had a bathtub big enough, Saturn would float. And though the rings stretch incredibly wide, they're surprisingly thin.

The Spinning Ring of Pieces
You'll need
- A round bowl or bike wheel
- Small light pieces (rice, beads, or confetti)
- A steady spin
What to do
- Sprinkle a ring of small pieces around the inside of a bowl, away from the very center.
- Gently spin the bowl and watch the pieces travel around together in a band.
- Notice from above they blur into what looks like a smooth ring, even though it's many separate bits.
- Slow it down and see the individual pieces again, just like Saturn's rings up close.

The big idea
Saturn's rings appear solid but are made of countless separate particles, from dust-sized grains to boulders and house-sized chunks, almost all water ice, each orbiting the planet on its own path.
The rings are enormously wide, stretching far beyond Saturn itself, yet astonishingly thin, in many places only about as thick as a house. Gaps in the rings are carved and shaped by the gravity of small moons.
Saturn is the least dense planet in the solar system, so low in density that it would float in water, if an ocean vast enough existed. It's a giant made mostly of light gases, wearing a crown of ice.
Wonder together
- The rings are millions of kilometers wide but only about as thick as a house. Why do they look like a solid sheet?
- Each ring particle keeps its own orbit. Why don't they all just clump together or crash?
- Small moons carve gaps in the rings. How can a tiny moon shape a band of ice?

- Small markers at different distances from center
- A steady spin
What to do
- Place small markers at different distances from the center of the spinning surface.
- Give one gentle spin and watch: outer markers travel a longer path than inner ones.
- Imagine each at its own true orbital speed, inner pieces actually circle faster than outer ones around a planet.
- Picture billions of such pieces, each in its own lane at its own speed, never colliding, that's a ring.
