The big idea
A mother sea turtle can swim across an entire ocean, thousands of miles, and then find her way back to the very same beach where she hatched, long ago.
How does she do it, with no map and no signs in the open sea? She has a special sense: she can feel the Earth's invisible magnetic field, like a compass built right inside her.
Sea turtles can't pull their heads into their shells like land turtles can. So instead of hiding, they rely on calm, slow, steady swimming to stay safe on their long, patient journey.

Let's try it
Make a Floating Compass
You'll need
- A sewing needle and a magnet
- A small dish of water and a bit of cork or leaf
- A grown-up to help
What to do
- With a grown-up, stroke the needle along the magnet the same direction about 30 times, to magnetize it.
- Lay the needle on a small piece of cork or leaf and float it in a dish of still water.
- Watch the needle slowly turn and settle, pointing north and south, lining up with Earth's magnetic field.
- Turn the dish and watch the needle swing back to point the same way. It feels the Earth's field, like a turtle does.

Read this one aloud, slowly
Lie still and imagine floating the way a sea turtle swims: a slow push of the flippers, then a long, easy glide. Breathe in as she pulls, breathe out as she glides. She carries her compass and her calm across the whole dark ocean, in no hurry at all, and you can borrow that calm now. Ten slow glides is usually enough. Breathe in slow… and out… gliding gently home, into sleep.

The big idea
Sea turtles are extraordinary navigators. Many species migrate thousands of kilometers across open ocean, and females often return to nest on the very beach where they themselves hatched, decades earlier.
Their secret is magnetoreception: they can sense the Earth's magnetic field, which varies in a predictable way across the globe, and use it like a map and compass to know both direction and location.
Unlike land turtles, sea turtles can't withdraw into their shells; their bodies are built for a life of swimming, not hiding. Their strategy is endurance and calm, steady propulsion, a patient crossing guided by an inherited internal sense of the planet itself.

You'll need
- A needle and a strong magnet
- A dish of water and a cork slice

What to do
- Magnetize the needle by stroking it 30+ times in one direction along the magnet.
- Float it on a cork in still water and let it settle; note the direction it points.
- Check with a real compass, your needle should align north-south too.
- Bring the magnet near and watch the needle swing, then remove it, showing how a magnetic sense could be disrupted.
