Shooting Stars: Wishes on Ancient Dust

The big idea
When you see a shooting star, you're not really seeing a star at all. You're seeing a tiny piece of rock or dust, often no bigger than a grain of sand, falling into the air high above your house.
It's moving so incredibly fast that it squishes the air in front of it, and that squished air gets so hot it glows. The bright streak you see is the glowing air, not the little grain itself.
Most of these grains are so small they burn up completely before they ever reach the ground. That quick, bright line is the whole show, and it's over in about a second.

Catch a Falling Star
You'll need
- A clear, dark night away from bright lights
- A blanket or reclining chair
- Warm clothes and patience
What to do
- On a clear night, get comfy outside and let your eyes adjust to the dark for about ten minutes. Slowly the dim stars appear.
- Pick a wide patch of sky and just watch it, without staring too hard. Shooting stars come when you least expect them.
- When one streaks by, notice how fast it is, there and gone. Count how many you see in fifteen minutes.
- If you can, try again during a meteor shower (like the Perseids in August), when many more fall each hour.

- Blow gently on a bit of flour or dust in a sunbeam and watch tiny specks catch the light, like grains in the sky.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, far above your roof, tiny grains of ancient dust are drifting toward the air, and now and then one flares into a bright, quiet streak and is gone. You don't have to catch them. You don't have to wish. You can just let the sky do its slow, sparkling work while you rest. Breathe in… and let each breath out be one soft streak of light, brief and bright and finished. The sky has room for all of them.

The big idea
A shooting star, properly called a meteor, is the flash of light made when a small piece of space rock or dust, a meteoroid, slams into Earth's atmosphere. Many of these grains are older than the planets, leftover crumbs from the birth of the Solar System.
They arrive incredibly fast, often tens of kilometers every second. At that speed the meteoroid rams into the air and compresses it so hard that the air heats up and glows, dozens of kilometers above the ground. The streak you see is that glowing, superheated air, not the grain burning like a match.
Most meteoroids are smaller than a pea and vaporize completely, high up. On an ordinary night a few random ones fall each hour. During a meteor shower, Earth crosses the debris trail of a comet, and dozens can appear each hour, all seeming to radiate from a single point in the sky.

Speed Makes the Light
You'll need
- A hand bicycle pump (or just your two palms)
- A meteor-shower calendar
- A dark sky, another night
What to do
- Pump a bicycle pump a few times with your thumb over the hole, then feel the pump near the nozzle. It's warm, because you squeezed the air.
- No pump? Rub your palms together fast for ten seconds and feel the heat. Squeezing and pushing makes heat.
- Now picture a grain hitting the air at forty kilometers a second, squeezing it far harder. That's why the air glows white-hot.
- Look up the next meteor shower's date and 'radiant' (the point it comes from), then watch and trace a few streaks back to that point.

- Look up a meteorite in a museum or online, a grain's big cousin that actually landed.
