The big idea
Far above your head, higher than any plane can fly, a spaceship called the International Space Station is circling the Earth. Astronauts live and work inside it, floating from wall to wall.
The station moves so fast that it loops all the way around the Earth in about ninety minutes. That means the crew sees the sun come up about sixteen times every single day, a sunrise every hour and a half.
There's no up or down in space, so everything floats, including the astronauts. At bedtime they zip into sleeping bags clipped to the wall, arms drifting in front of them, and sleep in mid-air.

You'll need
- A bathtub, sink, or big bowl of water
- A few small waterproof toys
- Your imagination
What to do
- Put some small toys in the water and give them a gentle nudge. Watch them drift slowly, not falling, just floating.
- Notice there's no 'down' pulling them to the bottom fast, they hover and turn. That's a little like the station.
- Let go of a toy under the water and watch it hang a moment before it moves. On the station, it would just stay, floating.
- Now imagine your whole bedroom like that, every toy and blanket gently adrift, while you sleep in the air.

Spot it in real life
- Look up when the station passes over at dusk, a bright, steady light gliding across the sky (apps show when).

- Notice a sunrise or sunset and remember the crew is seeing one about every ninety minutes.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Far above you tonight, someone is asleep in mid-air, held by nothing but a soft bag clipped to the wall, drifting gently as the whole Earth turns below. You don't have to hold on to anything either. Your bed is doing the holding. Breathe in slow… and out… and let yourself grow light and easy, floating down into sleep while the station glides quietly overhead, sunrise after sunrise, all night long.

The big idea
The International Space Station orbits about 400 kilometers above Earth, traveling roughly 28,000 kilometers per hour. At that speed it circles the whole planet in about 90 minutes, so its crew sees around sixteen sunrises and sixteen sunsets every day.
Astronauts float not because there's no gravity, but because they're in continuous free fall. The station is falling toward Earth constantly, yet moving sideways so fast that it keeps missing, curving around the planet instead of hitting it. That endless fall is what we feel as weightlessness.
Living there means rethinking everything: sleeping bags are strapped to the wall so no one drifts, water clings in floating spheres, and 'up' is simply whichever way your head happens to point.

You'll need
- A ball
- Open space (outside or a big room)
- A steady arm
What to do
- Drop a ball straight down. Gravity pulls it to the floor, fast.
- Now throw it level, and watch it curve down as it flies, still falling, but moving sideways too.
- Throw it harder and it lands farther away, its fall stretched out by its speed.
- Imagine throwing it so fast that, as it falls, the ground curves away beneath it just as quickly. It would never land, it would orbit. That's the station.

- Swing a bucket of water in a fast circle; the water 'falls' outward and stays in, like orbital motion.
- Track a sunrise, then remember the crew will see their next one in about ninety minutes.
