Every snowflake has six arms, always six, never five or seven. That's because of the special way the tiniest pieces of water link up when they freeze, into a six-sided shape.
As a snowflake floats down through a cloud, it grows its arms, and the exact pattern it makes is a little diary of its trip: how cold it was, and how wet, all the way down.
When lots of snow lands, it's surprisingly full of trapped air, that's why fresh snow makes the whole world go soft and quiet. The snow gently hushes every sound.

Fold a Six-Sided Flake
You'll need
- A square of paper
- Scissors (grown-up helps)
- A flat surface
What to do
- Fold the square in half to make a triangle, then fold that triangle into thirds, overlapping the sides.
- Snip off the bottom to even it up, then cut little shapes along the folded edges.
- Unfold it slowly, and you'll find a snowflake with six matching arms.
- Make another with different cuts, notice every flake comes out unique, just like the real ones.

The big idea
Snowflakes are ice crystals, and they have six-fold symmetry because water molecules bond into a hexagonal lattice when they freeze. That underlying six-sided structure shapes every arm.
As a flake falls, it grows by vapor freezing onto it, and the exact shape it takes depends on the temperature and humidity it passes through. Since each flake travels a slightly different path, each grows a unique pattern, a record of its journey.
Fresh snow is mostly air, tiny ice crystals loosely stacked with pockets of trapped air between them. Those pockets absorb sound, which is why a fresh snowfall makes the world unusually quiet.

You'll need
- A piece of dark cloth or paper, chilled outside
- A magnifying glass
- Snowfall (or make paper flakes indoors)
What to do
- Chill a dark cloth outdoors so flakes won't melt on it, then catch a few falling snowflakes.
- Examine them with a magnifier: count the arms and note the shape, flat plates, stars, or needles.
- Compare several, they share six-fold symmetry but no two patterns match.
- No snow? Fold paper into sixths and cut flakes, then see how tiny changes make each unique.
