The big idea
Spider silk is one of nature's most remarkable materials: weight for weight, it's stronger than steel and far stretchier, able to absorb great force without snapping. A spider spins several kinds from glands in its body, sticky for catching, strong for framing.
Orb-weavers rebuild their webs regularly, often nightly. Many consume the old silk first, recycling its protein, then spin a fresh web in under an hour, laying spokes, then a spiral, in a precise, repeatable plan.
The web is also a sensory organ. Resting at the hub, the spider reads vibrations traveling through the threads, distinguishing wind from prey from a mate by the pattern of the buzz. It effectively 'sees' its world by feel.
