The big idea
Between England and France there's a stretch of sea. Instead of only sailing across it or flying over it, people dug a tunnel underneath it, so trains can travel from one country to the other without ever getting wet.
The tunnel runs through a soft, chalky rock deep below the seabed. Two digging teams started from opposite sides and tunneled toward each other, and when they finally met in the middle, their tunnels lined up almost perfectly.
A train travels through in about half an hour, humming steadily through the dark, with the whole sea resting quietly far above. Down there it's calm and dry the entire way.

Dig a Tunnel That Meets
You'll need
- A tray of damp sand, or a lump of play dough
- Two spoons or fingers
- A partner
What to do
- Pack damp sand into a mound, or shape a fat lump of dough into a hill.
- You and a partner each start a tunnel from opposite sides, aiming to meet in the middle.
- Go slowly and keep checking your direction, small nudges left or right to line up.
- See if your tunnels meet. It's tricky. Now imagine doing it through rock, under the sea, for fifty kilometers.

The big idea
The Channel Tunnel, nicknamed the Chunnel, links England and France beneath the sea. It runs about 50 kilometers, and the stretch under the water is the longest undersea section of any tunnel in the world.
It was bored through a layer of soft, fairly waterproof chalk marl deep below the seabed, using giant tunnel-boring machines. There are actually three tunnels side by side: two for trains and a smaller service tunnel between them for safety and maintenance.
Two teams dug from opposite coasts, guided by careful surveying and lasers, and met beneath the sea within centimeters, an extraordinary feat of precision. Today a train crosses in about half an hour, dry and calm, with the whole English Channel overhead.

You'll need
- A ball of string
- A compass (or a phone compass)
- A long room or hallway, and a partner
What to do
- Stand at opposite ends of a room. Each of you must 'aim' a straight string line to meet at an agreed midpoint, without walking it first.
- Use the compass to keep your heading straight, and agree on the exact meeting spot by measuring.
- Pull the strings taut toward the midpoint and see how close they meet.
- Now imagine doing this through solid rock, over 50 kilometers, under the sea, with lasers instead of string.
