The Sun: Anchor of the Solar System

The big idea

The sun is a giant star, and it sits at the very center of our solar system, holding eight planets, including our Earth, gently in place as they circle around it.

It holds them without ever touching them, using gravity, an invisible pull that reaches across a huge, empty distance. The sun is so big it holds more than ninety-nine out of every hundred bits of stuff in the whole solar system.

The sunlight warming your window took about eight minutes to travel all the way here from the sun. And our sun is a calm, middle-aged star, with billions of peaceful years still ahead of it.

Hold Without Touching

About 10 minutes · a ball on a string · open space

You'll need

  • A small ball or beanbag tied to a string
  • Open space to swing it safely
  • A steady hand

What to do

  1. Hold the string and gently swing the ball around in a circle above the ground.
  2. Notice: your hand never touches the ball, but the string's pull keeps it circling you.
  3. The pull of the string is like the sun's gravity, an invisible tug that keeps the planets circling.
  4. Slow your swing and let the ball settle, then imagine the sun holding all its planets, calm and steady, that way.
Why it works: the string's pull keeps the ball circling your hand without touching it, just like the sun's gravity keeps the planets circling it across empty space. Gravity is an invisible pull that reaches across huge distances, and the sun's is strong enough to hold the whole solar system.
