The big idea
Lightning is a giant spark, like the tiny zap you sometimes feel, but enormous. For a flash of a second, it heats the air around it hotter than the surface of the sun.
Thunder is the sound that spark makes. The lightning heats the air so fast that the air jumps outward, and that sudden push is the big rumble you hear.
You always see the flash before you hear the rumble, because light travels much faster than sound. You can even count the seconds between them: about five seconds means the storm is a mile away.

What to do
- Safe and cozy inside, watch for a flash of lightning.
- The moment you see it, start counting slowly: one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand…
- Stop counting when you hear the thunder. Every five seconds you counted is about one mile away.
- Count each time. If the number gets bigger, the storm is moving away, farther with every flash.

The next time the sky rumbles, you can breathe in while it's quiet, and breathe out slowly through the sound. The storm keeps its distance, and your breath keeps its rhythm, and counting the gap turns the whole thing into gentle arithmetic. There's nothing to do but listen, and count, and breathe. In slow… and out… as the storm rolls on by, and you drift into sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Inside a tall storm cloud, rising and falling air and ice separate electric charge until a huge difference builds up. Lightning is the sudden discharge, a giant spark, that leaps to balance it, briefly heating the air along its path to tens of thousands of degrees, hotter than the sun's surface.
That flash-heated air expands explosively, then quickly cools and contracts, creating a shock wave we hear as thunder. Flash and rumble happen together; we simply see the light before we hear the sound.
The delay is a distance meter. Light arrives almost instantly, but sound travels roughly a kilometer every three seconds (about a mile every five). Count the seconds between flash and thunder, and you've measured how far away the strike was.

You'll need
- A thunderstorm watched safely indoors
- A stopwatch or counting
- Paper to log flash-to-thunder times
What to do
- On each flash, start timing; stop when the thunder arrives. Record the seconds.
- Divide by three for kilometers, or five for miles, to estimate each strike's distance.
- Keep a running log through the storm.
- Watch the trend: rising numbers mean the storm is moving away, falling numbers mean it's approaching.

Spot it in real life
- Time flash-to-thunder gaps and convert them to distance during a safe storm.
- Track whether a storm nears or recedes by whether the gaps shrink or grow.
- Make a static spark (balloon on hair in the dark) and connect it to lightning's physics.
- Notice thunder's roll and echo, sound bouncing off clouds, hills, and buildings.

Challenge: During a safe storm, time the gap from each flash to its thunder, convert to distance (divide seconds by 3 for km or 5 for miles), and log several. Is the storm approaching or moving away? Then complete the diagram, labeling the flash, the heated air, and the thunder's shock wave.
