Thunder & Lightning: The Sky's Electric Lullaby

For ages 4–6

The big idea

Lightning is a giant spark, like the tiny zap you sometimes feel, but enormous. For a flash of a second, it heats the air around it hotter than the surface of the sun.

Thunder is the sound that spark makes. The lightning heats the air so fast that the air jumps outward, and that sudden push is the big rumble you hear.

You always see the flash before you hear the rumble, because light travels much faster than sound. You can even count the seconds between them: about five seconds means the storm is a mile away.

  1. Where do you think the storm is right now, close by or far away?
  2. Why do you suppose light always wins the race against sound?
  3. What do you think rain would sound like from inside a cloud?
  4. Counting the gap turns a scary rumble into a number. What else feels smaller once you understand it?

Count the Storm's Distance

During a safe storm (indoors) · just you · counting

You'll need

  • A thunderstorm, watched safely from indoors
  • Your counting voice
  • A grown-up nearby

What to do

  1. Safe and cozy inside, watch for a flash of lightning.
  2. The moment you see it, start counting slowly: one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand…
  3. Stop counting when you hear the thunder. Every five seconds you counted is about one mile away.
  4. Count each time. If the number gets bigger, the storm is moving away, farther with every flash.
Why it works: light reaches you almost instantly, but sound is much slower, so the gap between flash and rumble tells you the distance. Counting turns a startling storm into arithmetic, and knowing where the storm is can turn worry into calm curiosity.

Spot it in real life

  • Count the seconds between a flash and its rumble to find a storm's distance.
  • Notice you always see lightning before you hear thunder, light wins the race.
  • Feel a tiny static 'zap' after socks on carpet, a mini cousin of lightning.
  • Listen to how thunder rolls and fades, sound bouncing off clouds and hills.

Read this one aloud, slowly

The next time the sky rumbles, you can breathe in while it's quiet, and breathe out slowly through the sound. The storm keeps its distance, and your breath keeps its rhythm, and counting the gap turns the whole thing into gentle arithmetic. There's nothing to do but listen, and count, and breathe. In slow… and out… as the storm rolls on by, and you drift into sleep.

Cozy and safe inside, a name the an animal watched a storm and learned its secret. Lightning is a giant spark that, for one flash, heats the air hotter than the sun. That sudden heat makes the air jump outward, and the big rumble it makes is thunder. You always see the a color flash before you hear the sound, because light is faster, so a name counted the seconds, one, two, three, gently a silly action (ends in -ing), until the a describing word thunder rolled in with a soft "a sound." Every five seconds meant a mile away, and a big number counts later, the storm had drifted off past the a food on the table.

  • Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
  • Set out the few things the experiment needs.
  • Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
