Tides: How the Moon Moves the Sea
The expanded guide to the Tides episode, the same calm science, opened up into something you can do together. Each lane has its own big idea, questions, a hands-on experiment, science words, and a printable to keep.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
The ocean has a slow in and out, a little like breathing. Twice a day the water climbs up the sand, and twice a day it slides back down.
The water isn't deciding to move. The Moon is moving it. The Moon is far, far away in the sky, and it never touches the sea, not even once. But even from all the way out there, it can give the ocean the gentlest pull, just enough to lift the water toward it.
When the water comes up the beach, we call it high tide. When it slides back down, we call it low tide. The Moon keeps this going all day and all night, and it never gets tired.
Wonder together
- If the ocean breathes in and out, what do you think it's breathing?
- The Moon can pull the whole sea without touching it. What can you move without touching it, just by getting close?
- Where do you think all that water goes when the tide slides away?
- If you left a little bucket on the sand, what might the sea bring back and leave inside it?

Let's try it
The Tabletop Tide
You'll need
- A baking tray or shallow dish
- A little water
- A small handful of sand or a few pebbles
- A shell or tiny toy
What to do
- Pile the sand or pebbles at one end to make a “beach.” Pour a little water at the other end.
- Lift the water end of the tray just a tiny bit, slowly, then set it down. Watch the water climb up the beach. That's high tide.
- Lift the beach end a tiny bit instead. The water slides back away. That's low tide.
- Rest a shell near the water's edge. Bring the tide up to reach it, then let it slide back and leave the shell behind, the way a real beach does.

- The slow way the ocean climbs up the beach and slides back down, twice every day.
- High tide
- When the water has come all the way up and the beach is small.
- Low tide
- When the water has slid back and lots of wet sand is showing.
- The Moon
- Our round neighbor in the sky. It's the one giving the sea its gentle pull.
- Gravity
- An invisible pull that big things have. The Moon uses it to tug the water, even from far away.
Spot it in real life
- At the beach, find the wet line on the sand. That's how high the water reached earlier, the tide left its mark.
- Look for the Moon in the daytime sky. It's still pulling the sea, even when the Sun is out.
- Fill the bathtub and rock the water very gently. Watch it climb one end, then the other, a tiny indoor tide.
- Set a full cup of water down and watch it settle flat and even. That calm settling is how the sea likes to move too.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, while you sleep, the ocean will rise and come back down two whole times, and you won't have to do a thing. The Moon will take care of all that water. Breathe in slowly, like the tide coming up the sand… and let it out, like the water sliding back. The Moon is already up there, doing its quiet work. You can let it.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
In most places, the sea rises and falls twice a day, two high tides and two low tides. It happens because the Moon's gravity reaches across a quarter of a million miles of empty space and pulls on Earth's oceans.
The water facing the Moon gets tugged toward it and bulges outward. Here's the surprising part: the water on the far side of Earth bulges out too. That's because the Moon pulls on the solid planet a little harder than it pulls on the far ocean, so the Earth gets tugged away and leaves that water behind. Two bulges, on opposite sides. As the Earth spins through them each day, every coast passes through two highs and two lows.
The Moon is also drifting along its orbit, so the whole pattern arrives about fifty minutes later each day. And when the Sun lines up with the Moon, at the full Moon and the new Moon, their pulls add together and the tides grow extra big. Those are called spring tides, though they have nothing to do with the season. “Spring” here means to leap up.

- The far side of Earth bulges away from the Moon. Can you think of another time being pulled makes something on the opposite side move too?
- Tides arrive about fifty minutes later each day. Why do you think the ocean doesn't keep the same schedule a clock does?
- If the Moon drifted twice as far away, would the tides get bigger or smaller?
- Spring tides happen when the Sun and Moon pull in a line. What else in nature gets stronger when two forces line up?
- A tide-pool crab is underwater, then out in the open air, twice every day. What would you need to survive both?

You'll need
- A tide table for any coast (a weather app or an online tide chart)
- Paper and pencil
- Two days
What to do
- Pick a coastline you like and look up today's tide times. Write down the two high tides and two low tides.
- Find the gap between a high tide and the next low tide. You'll see it's roughly six hours and a bit, a quarter of the day.
- Tomorrow, look up the same coast. Notice the high tide has slipped about fifty minutes later. That slip is the Moon moving along its orbit.
- Bonus: check tonight's Moon phase. Near a full or new Moon, see whether the high tides are running higher than usual, those are spring tides.
Science words
- Gravity
- The pull that every object with mass has on every other. It gets stronger when things are closer or more massive.
- Tidal force
- The difference in the Moon's pull across the width of the Earth. That difference is what stretches the ocean into two bulges.
- Spring tide
- An extra-large tide when the Sun and Moon line up, at the new and full Moon. Not about the season, it means the water leaps higher.
- Neap tide
- A milder tide when the Sun and Moon pull at right angles, at the first- and last-quarter Moon.
- Orbit
- The curved path the Moon travels around the Earth, taking about a month to go all the way round.
- Tide pool
- A pocket of seawater trapped among the rocks at low tide, a small world that waits for the sea to return.
Spot it in real life
- Pull up a tide table and predict the next high tide before it happens. Then check the wet sand line to see if you were right.
- Watch the Moon across a week. As it fills toward full, coastal tides build toward their spring-tide peak.
- On a spinning chair, hold a cup of water at arm's length and turn slowly. The water wants to swing outward, a cousin of the far-side bulge.
- Track the daily slip: if high tide is at 3:00 today, it's near 3:50 tomorrow. The Moon keeps that appointment book.

Read this one aloud, slowly
So the sea you pictured tonight is being lifted, very gently, by a Moon that has never touched it, and it will rise and fall four times before you wake. You don't have to hold any of it up. The Moon has kept the oceans moving for billions of years, and it will keep them moving tonight. Breathe in as the tide climbs… and out as it draws back. The same pull that moves the whole sea is happy to rock one small room.

One quiet evening, a name the an animal sat on the sand to learn why the sea keeps moving. High above, the Moon was pulling on the ocean with an invisible force called gravity. The Moon never touches the water, yet its pull stretches the sea into a giant bulge, like a a color water balloon that someone keeps a silly action (ends in -ing). Twice every day the water climbs high up the beach, and twice every day it slides back down, going "a sound" while the crabs hunt for a food. That a describing word rise and fall is the ocean breathing in and out, and the Moon has kept it going for billions of years.

- Set out the few things the experiment needs.
- Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
- Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
Tides are one of the most dependable rhythms on Earth. Nothing on the shore has to try; the water is lifted and lowered by something a quarter-million miles away that it will never touch. For a child, that's pure wonder. For the grown-up reading along, it often lands as something quieter, the relief of a thing that keeps happening whether or not we tend to it, and a reminder that some forces will carry the night whether or not we stay awake to manage them.
