Volcanoes: How the Earth Breathes

The big idea
Deep, deep under the ground, it's so hot that rock melts into a thick, glowing goo. A volcano is a place where a little of that warmth rises up and reaches the surface.
When the melted rock is deep underground, we call it magma. When it comes out and flows along the ground, we call it lava. Most of the time, lava doesn't explode. It oozes out slowly, like warm honey, and then cools into brand-new rock.
That's the secret: a volcano isn't only breaking things. It's making things. Bit by bit, ooze by ooze, volcanoes build new mountains and even whole new islands.

The Slow Ooze
You'll need
- A spoonful of honey or thick syrup
- A small plate
- A few minutes to watch
What to do
- Hold a spoonful of honey over the plate and let just a little slide off. Watch how slowly it moves.
- Let it pool and spread. It doesn't splash or rush, it creeps outward and settles.
- Drip a second layer on top of the first. See how it stacks up, building a little mound.
- That mound, built drip by drip, is how a gentle volcano builds a mountain, one slow layer of lava at a time.

Spot it in real life
- Let a candle burn a moment (with a grown-up), then watch the wax cool into a new shape. Melted-then-hardened is what lava does.
- Stack pancakes and look from the side, layer on layer, like a volcano builds a mountain.
- Squeeze toothpaste slowly onto a plate and watch it mound up, the way thick lava piles into a hill.
- Look at a map for Hawaii or Iceland, whole islands the Earth built with volcanoes.

For ages 7–10
The big idea
A volcano is a vent, an opening where heat and molten rock from deep inside the Earth reach the surface. Underground, that melted rock is called magma; once it erupts and flows, it's lava. The Earth's outer shell is broken into giant slabs called plates, and most volcanoes rise where those plates meet or where a hot spot burns through from below.
Not all eruptions are the same. Runny, low-gas lava produces gentle, oozing eruptions that build wide, gently sloped shield volcanoes, like those in Hawaii. Thick, gas-rich magma can trap pressure and erupt explosively, building steep, cone-shaped stratovolcanoes. The style depends mostly on how runny the magma is and how much gas it holds.
Over long stretches of time, this slow building adds up: the Hawaiian Islands are volcanoes that grew from the deep seafloor all the way above the waves. And volcanic rock, as it weathers, releases minerals that make some of the most fertile farmland on Earth.

Runny vs. Thick
You'll need
- Water in one cup
- Honey or thick syrup in another
- A baking tray, tilted on a book
- A spoon
What to do
- Prop one end of the tray up on a book so it slopes.
- Pour a spoonful of water at the top and watch how fast and far it runs.
- Now pour a spoonful of honey from the same spot. It creeps slowly and piles up thicker.
- The water is your runny lava, it spreads wide and flat, like a shield volcano. The honey is your thick lava, it mounds up steep, like a stratovolcano.

Spot it in real life
- Pour honey and water side by side and rank their viscosity, the same property that shapes real volcanoes.
- Find Hawaii and Iceland on a map: whole landmasses built by volcanoes, one from a hot spot, one on a plate boundary.
- Shake a fizzy drink, then open it slowly: trapped gas escaping is the same idea as gas driving an explosive eruption.
- Look up 'volcanic soil' and why regions near old volcanoes, like parts of Italy or Indonesia, grow such rich crops.

Deep underground, far below where a name the an animal could ever dig, the Earth is so hot that solid rock melts into a slow, a describing word liquid called magma. Magma is lighter than the rock around it, so it rises, the way a bubble of a color a food rises in a warm pot that is a silly action (ends in -ing). When it finally reaches the surface we call it lava, and the mountain lets out a long "a sound". Most volcanoes are gentle, oozing slowly and building brand-new land one thin layer at a time. That is exactly how islands like Hawaii were born, patiently, from the inside out.
