The Water Cycle: The Journey of a Droplet

The big idea
The water in your cup tonight has been on the most amazing journey. It's traveled as a cloud, a river, an ocean, and rain, over and over again, for a very long time.
Here's how the trip goes: the sun warms water in the sea and lifts it, invisibly, into the sky. Up high it cools and gathers into clouds. When the clouds get full, the water falls back down as rain or snow.
Then it flows into rivers and back to the sea, and the whole journey starts again. The water is never new. It just keeps going around, which is why we call it a cycle.

Let's try it
A Cloud in a Jar
You'll need
- A clear jar
- Warm water
- A plate and a few ice cubes
What to do
- With a grown-up, pour a little warm water into the jar to cover the bottom.
- Rest a plate on top and pile ice cubes on the plate.
- Wait a few minutes and watch: warm water rises as invisible vapor, hits the cold lid, and gathers into tiny droplets, a little cloud.
- Soon droplets grow heavy and 'rain' back down. You've made the water cycle in a jar.

Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight you can be a droplet that's done traveling for now, landed, pooled, and perfectly still. No rising into clouds, no falling as rain, just resting quietly in the warm little lake of your bed. The sun will come round again in the morning to lift the world back into its journey, but not yet. Breathe in slow… and out… and settle, still and calm, until then.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Earth's water is never created or used up, it just moves through a continuous loop powered by the sun. Warmth evaporates water from oceans, lakes, and even plants into invisible vapor that rises into the air.
High up, the vapor cools and condenses onto tiny particles, forming clouds. When droplets or ice crystals grow heavy enough, they fall as precipitation, rain, snow, or hail, onto land and sea.
On land, water flows through rivers and soaks into the ground, eventually returning to the ocean to begin again. Because it all recycles, the water in your glass is ancient: the very same molecules may have drifted over a dinosaur or filled a prehistoric sea.
Wonder together
- No new water is ever made. What does it mean that every drink you take is billions of years old?
- The sun powers the whole cycle. What would happen to the water cycle without it?
- Water even evaporates from leaves (transpiration). How might forests shape the rain?
- Snow can lock water up for months as glaciers or ice caps. How does that change the timing of the cycle?
- If the same molecules keep returning, where do you think the water in your glass has been?
Investigate it
Build the Whole Loop
You'll need
- A large bowl
- A smaller cup
- Plastic wrap, a small weight (a coin), warm water
What to do
- Put a few centimeters of warm water in the big bowl, and set the empty cup upright in the middle.
- Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and place a coin on top, right over the cup.
- Set it in a sunny spot. Water evaporates, condenses under the wrap, and drips down into the cup, collected 'rain.'
- Check after an hour: you've captured evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, a full cycle, and even purified the water on the way.

- Trace your local water: where rain falls, which river it joins, which sea it reaches.
- Notice salt left behind when saltwater dries, the reason evaporated ocean water falls as fresh rain.

Challenge: Trace one droplet through the whole cycle and write a short 'travel log' of at least five stops (for example: ocean, vapor, cloud, snow, river). Then complete the cycle diagram below, labeling evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.
Journal: The same water keeps returning in new forms. Write about something in your own life that comes back around, changed but never really gone.

So tonight, think of the water resting in you and around you, ancient, borrowed, always on its way somewhere, but paused for now. You don't have to rise or fall or flow tonight. You get to be the still part of the cycle, the pooled and quiet part, while the sun waits below the horizon to lift the world again tomorrow. Breathe in, slow… and out, slower… and rest where the water rests, calm and gathered, until morning.
