Whale Songs: The Ocean's Lullaby

The big idea
Humpback whales sing. Not with words, but with long, low, looping sounds that go on and on, a single song can last as long as twenty minutes, and a whale may sing it over and over for hours.
Underwater, sound travels much farther than it does in the air. A whale's low notes can reach other whales very, very far away, farther than any shout could ever go on land.
Whales that live near each other sing the same song, and slowly, together, they change it over the season, like a tune everyone learns and passes along. No whale sings all alone.

Sound Loves Water
You'll need
- Two metal spoons
- A sink, tub, or big bowl full of water
- Your ears
What to do
- In the air, tap the two spoons together gently and listen to the 'clink.'
- Now hold both spoons underwater and tap them together while you listen with your ear close to the water's surface.
- Notice how the underwater tap sounds fuller and carries through the water.
- Whales use this on a giant scale: sound moves better and farther through water, so their low songs can travel across the whole sea.

Spot it in real life
- Put your ear flat on a table and tap the far end, sound travels better through the solid than through the air, just like it does through water.
- Hum with your hand on your chest and feel it buzz. That buzz is the sound wave you're making.
- In the bath, dip one ear under and tap the tub gently. The sound arrives big and close.
- Listen for the lowest sound in your house, a fridge, a fan. Low sounds carry farthest, which is why whales sing low.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, far out in the deep, the whales are singing their long, slow songs, and the water is carrying every note gently out into the dark. No whale is singing alone. You can make a whale note too. Breathe in… and let your out-breath go long and low and soft, like a song sent to someone you love. The night ocean will carry it. You don't have to hold the note. Just let it go, and rest.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Humpback whales produce some of the most complex songs in the animal world. A full song is built from repeating parts, can run about twenty minutes, and may be sung over and over for hours. Mostly it's the males who sing, especially in the breeding season.
Sound behaves very differently in water than in air. It travels more than four times faster through seawater, and low-frequency sound in particular can carry enormous distances, some whale calls reach across huge stretches of ocean. That's why whales sing low: low notes travel farthest.
The songs aren't fixed. All the males in one ocean region tend to sing the same version, and it slowly changes over a season as small tweaks catch on and spread, a kind of shared culture, passed whale to whale, until an entire population is singing a new tune together.
Wonder together
- Sound travels four times faster in water than in air. Why would being packed tighter help sound move quicker?
- The whole region's whales slowly change their song together. How is that like a trend or a slang word spreading among people?
- Low notes carry farther than high ones. If you had to send a sound as far as possible, would you go high or low?

High Note, Low Note
You'll need
- A large bowl or tub of water
- Two metal spoons
- A rubber band and a small box (optional)
What to do
- Tap the spoons together in the air, then underwater, listening each time. Underwater the sound is fuller and travels better, water carries it well.
- Stretch a rubber band over a box and pluck it. Pull it tighter to make a higher note, looser for a lower note.
- Hum your lowest note, then your highest, with a hand on your chest. Feel where each one buzzes.
- Think about which note would reach a friend across a noisy room. Low, steady sounds cut through and carry, the same reason whales choose low songs for long distances.

- Tune a guitar or rubber band tighter and looser and watch pitch change with tension, the same physics behind high and low notes.
- Notice how a distant bass beat reaches you through walls while the high notes fade. Low frequencies win at distance, whale-style.
- Look up a humpback song recording and time one repeating phrase; see if you can hear where the pattern starts again.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
Whale song stays with people because it's connection stretched across impossible distance, a voice reaching for another voice through miles of dark water. The songs even change together, a shared tune drifting through a whole population over a season, so that no whale sings entirely alone. For the grown-up listening at bedtime, there's comfort in that: the idea that a low, patient call really can carry, and that being far from someone doesn't have to mean being out of touch.
