In winter, the days are short and cold, and the winter solstice is the shortest day of all, with the longest night of the whole year.
Here's the surprising reason: it's not because Earth is farther from the sun. It's because the Earth is tilted, like a slightly leaning top. In winter, your half of the world leans away from the sun, so the sunlight is weaker and the days are short.
The best part comes right after. The very next day, the daylight starts growing again, just a little longer each day, all the way to summer. The solstice is the moment the light begins its journey back.

The Tilt That Makes Seasons
You'll need
- A ball (the Earth) with a stick through it for the tilt
- A lamp (the sun)
- A dim room
What to do
- Tilt the ball so its 'North' leans to one side, and keep it tilted the same way the whole time.
- Hold it on one side of the lamp so the top leans away from the light, that's winter up north; see how the top gets dim, slanted light.
- Carry it to the other side of the lamp, still tilted the same way, now the top leans toward the light, that's summer.
- Notice the Earth didn't get closer or farther, only the tilt changed which part leaned toward the sun.

The big idea
Seasons are caused by Earth's axial tilt (about 23.5 degrees), not by its distance from the sun. As Earth orbits, that fixed tilt means each hemisphere leans toward the sun for part of the year and away for another part.
At the winter solstice, your hemisphere leans farthest from the sun. Sunlight arrives at a low, glancing angle, spread thin, and the day is the shortest of the year, giving the longest night. Low-angle light also delivers less warmth, which is a big reason winter is cold.
The solstice is a turning point: the very next day, daylight begins lengthening again, minute by minute, toward the summer solstice. It's the astronomical hinge on which the returning light swings.

You'll need
- A flashlight
- Graph paper or a grid drawn on paper
- A dim room
What to do
- Shine the flashlight straight down onto the grid and outline the bright circle; count the squares it covers.
- Now tilt the flashlight to a low angle and outline the light again, it's larger and dimmer.
- Compare: the same light spread over more squares means less energy per square.
- That's winter: low-angle sun spreads its energy thin, so each patch of ground gets less warmth.
