Winter Solstice: Why It Is Cold in Winter

The big idea

In winter, the days are short and cold, and the winter solstice is the shortest day of all, with the longest night of the whole year.

Here's the surprising reason: it's not because Earth is farther from the sun. It's because the Earth is tilted, like a slightly leaning top. In winter, your half of the world leans away from the sun, so the sunlight is weaker and the days are short.

The best part comes right after. The very next day, the daylight starts growing again, just a little longer each day, all the way to summer. The solstice is the moment the light begins its journey back.

The Tilt That Makes Seasons

About 10 minutes · a lamp and a ball · a dim room

You'll need

  • A ball (the Earth) with a stick through it for the tilt
  • A lamp (the sun)
  • A dim room

What to do

  1. Tilt the ball so its 'North' leans to one side, and keep it tilted the same way the whole time.
  2. Hold it on one side of the lamp so the top leans away from the light, that's winter up north; see how the top gets dim, slanted light.
  3. Carry it to the other side of the lamp, still tilted the same way, now the top leans toward the light, that's summer.
  4. Notice the Earth didn't get closer or farther, only the tilt changed which part leaned toward the sun.
Why it works: seasons come from Earth's tilt, not its distance from the sun. When your half leans away, sunlight hits at a low, spread-out angle and days are short, that's winter. On the solstice, your half leans farthest away; after that, it slowly tips back toward the sun.

  • Tilt a ball by a lamp and see how the leaning half gets weaker light.
  • Notice how low the winter sun stays, its light comes in at a slant.
  • Track sunset times over weeks and watch the days grow after the solstice.
  • Feel how slanted winter light is cooler than the high, direct summer sun.

Wrap up in the long, calm night, knowing the light is already turning around, already on its slow way back, and it knows exactly where to find you. There's nothing to do but rest in the good dark. On the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, a name the an animal learned a surprise: winter is cold not because Earth is far from the sun, but because our half of the world leans away from it. The next day, the light begins coming back, a little more each day. So a name wrapped up a describing word and warm under a a color blanket, watched the stars, gently a silly action (ends in -ing), whispered "a sound" to the long night, and shared a big number cups of cocoa and some a food.

  • Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
  • End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.
