The Bedtime Scientist

A question

Can hippos swim?

A calm, true answer. Then, if the wondering keeps going, the whole episode.

The short answer

Not really, and they do not need to. Hippos are too dense to float, so they sink, and then walk or push off along the riverbed in long slow bounds.

They can doze in the water, rising to breathe without fully waking. And their skin makes its own reddish natural sunscreen.
