Why does the ocean have tides?

The Moon pulls on the ocean. Its gravity stretches the water into a slight bulge on the side facing it, and, for a subtler reason, another bulge on the far side.

Earth turns underneath those bulges, so most shores pass through roughly two high tides and two low tides a day. The Moon never touches the sea, and moves it twice daily all the same.
