The science, gently

  • Anything you put into water pushes some water aside, and the water presses back upward exactly as hard as the water that moved weighs. That upward push is called buoyancy.
  • The same steel that would sink straight down as a solid block will float once it is shaped into a hollow hull, because the whole shape, air and all, pushes aside far more water than the ship weighs.
  • The largest ships are the largest moving things people have ever made. One can be as long as four soccer fields, with a propeller taller than a house, and sailors paint a mark on the hull to show how deep it may safely sit.
