The Bedtime Scientist

An idea

Force and machines

Trading speed for strength

Machines almost never make more power out of nothing. What a good machine does is trade: give up speed and you can gain enormous strength, which is why the strongest machines on your street are usually the slowest.

Once you know the trade, big machines stop being loud and start being clever. Low gears, wide wheels, liquid pushed through a pipe, steam let go at exactly the right moment.
