Amazon Rainforest: The River Above the Trees
The Amazon holds two rivers. One runs along the ground where everyone can see it. The other runs above the trees, made of water the forest breathed out, and it is the one that keeps the first one full.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
In the rainforest it rains a lot. The rain lands on the leaves, and drips down, and soaks into the ground where the roots are waiting.
Then the tree does something amazing. It drinks the water up through its trunk, all the way to the very top leaves, higher than a house.
And up in the leaves, the water goes back out into the air, so quietly you cannot see it. It floats up and helps make the next cloud. The forest is making its own rain.

Catch a Tree Breathing
You'll need
- A leafy plant or a small tree branch outside
- A clear plastic bag
- A twist tie or string
What to do
- Find a branch with plenty of green leaves on it.
- Slip the clear bag over the leaves and tie it loosely around the stem.
- Leave it somewhere sunny and go and do something else for a few hours.
- Come back and look at the inside of the bag.

- Rainforest
- A warm, wet forest where it rains almost every day.
- Canopy
- The leafy roof at the top of the forest, where the tallest branches meet.
- Roots
- The parts of a tree under the ground that drink up water.
- Vapour
- Water that has turned so light and small you cannot see it floating in the air.
- Cloud
- Billions of tiny water drops, gathered together up in the sky.
Spot it in real life
- Look for drops on the inside of a window on a cold morning. That is water coming out of the air.
- Water a houseplant and come back the next day. The soil is drier, and the plant is not.
- After rain, notice how long it takes for a puddle to disappear. It is going up.
- Stand under a tree in light rain and listen. The rain arrives late, one layer at a time.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, picture the rainforest in the dark. Rain is falling somewhere above you, coming down slowly through layer after layer of leaves, so by the time it reaches the ground it is only a soft patter. All around, the trees are quietly drinking, lifting water up through themselves without a sound, and letting it go again into the warm night air. Nothing there is rushing. Breathe in slowly, like a tree drawing water up, and out again, soft as a leaf. The forest will keep making its rain while you sleep.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Water in the Amazon does not simply run downhill to the sea. A large share of it goes back up. Rain soaks into the soil, roots take it in, and the tree moves it all the way to its highest leaves through narrow tubes running up the trunk.
At the leaf, the water leaves the plant as vapour. That is transpiration, and a single large tree can move hundreds of litres in a day. Multiply that by a forest and you get an amount of moisture large enough to change the weather.
The vapour rises, cools, and gathers on tiny floating specks of dust and pollen to form cloud droplets. Scientists call the enormous streams of moisture that result flying rivers. The Amazon River runs along the ground. The other one runs above the canopy, and it helps refill the first.

- There is no pump in a tree. What do you think actually pulls water up a trunk that tall?
- Why might a forest that makes its own rain be in trouble if a lot of it were cut down?

Measure What a Leaf Lets Go
You'll need
- Two similar potted plants, watered the same
- A clear plastic bag and a tie
- Kitchen scales
What to do
- Weigh both pots and write the numbers down.
- Bag the leaves of one plant, sealing around the stem so air cannot get out. Leave the other uncovered.
- Put both somewhere bright and leave them for a day.
- Weigh both again, and look at the inside of the bag before you open it.

- Transpiration
- Water leaving a plant's leaves as vapour, after travelling up from the roots.
- Canopy
- The dense upper layer of a forest, where most of the leaves and most of the light are.
- Water vapour
- Water in gas form, invisible, mixed into the air around you.
- Condensation
- Vapour cooling and gathering back into liquid drops.
- Flying river
- A vast stream of atmospheric moisture, much of it lifted off a forest.
- Nucleus
- The tiny particle a cloud droplet needs to form around. Dust, pollen, or salt will do.
Spot it in real life
- Breathe onto a cold window. That fog is your own water vapour condensing, the same step that makes a cloud.
- Compare the air under a big tree on a hot day with the air out in the open. The tree is running a humidifier.
- Watch a puddle shrink on a sunny day. No one drained it. It went into the air.
- Look at how long rain takes to reach you under dense trees. The canopy slows the whole arrival.

Challenge: Draw the journey of one drop of water: from a cloud, onto a leaf, into the soil, up through the roots and trunk, out of the highest leaf, and back into the sky. Label each stage with the right word.

Read this one aloud, slowly
Tonight, imagine standing on the forest floor in the dark. Far above you the canopy is holding the rain, letting it through slowly, a layer at a time, so it arrives as a soft patter instead of a downpour. All around you, quietly and without any effort you could hear, water is travelling upward through millions of trunks, reaching the highest leaves and slipping out into the warm air to become tomorrow's cloud. It has been doing this for longer than anyone has been watching, and it will keep doing it tonight. Breathe in slowly. Breathe out, soft as a leaf. Let the forest carry on without you.
A Silly Science Story
The Drop That Went the Wrong Way
Pick the silliest words you can. The story stays true no matter what you choose: that's the science hiding inside the giggles. Fill in the blanks and watch it come alive.
Once there was a raindrop named a name who fell onto a a describing word leaf, high in the rainforest canopy. It slid down, down, past a a color frog making a a sound noise, and soaked into the dark soil. Then something surprising happened: a giant tree began drinking, and the drop went UP. Up through the roots, up the trunk, a silly action (ends in -ing) all the way to the top. At the highest leaf the drop turned into invisible vapour and floated into the sky, where it joined a cloud the size of a a food. And then, of course, it fell again. It has done this more times than anyone can count.

Make it a Family Science Night

- Set out the few things the experiment needs.

- Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
The Amazon is usually described as a river with a forest around it. It is closer to the truth to say it is a forest that makes its own weather. Water comes up through the trees and leaves the leaves as vapour, in quantities large enough that atmospheric scientists talk about flying rivers moving overhead. The forest is not sitting in the water cycle. It is running part of it. There is something steadying in that for a grown-up: the work that keeps the whole system going is invisible, unhurried, and happening in every leaf at once, without anything announcing itself.
