The Bedtime Scientist

Privacy

What we keep, and what we don't.

This is a show for children, so the honest answer matters more than the short one. There are no accounts, no advertising, no cookies, and nothing here follows you around the internet. What little we do collect is listed below, in plain language.

The website

What you choose to give us.

Two forms on this site collect information, and both are meant for a grown-up to fill in.

  • The newsletter. If you sign up, we store the email address you type. It is used to send you the letter, and nothing else.
  • The contact form. If you write to us, we store the name, email address, subject, and message you send, so we can reply.

Both forms are handled by Netlify, who host this site, and the submissions are stored in our account there. We do not sell, rent, trade, or share this information with anyone. You can ask us to delete anything you have sent by writing to the address at the bottom of this page, and we will.

What gets measured.

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see roughly how many people visit and which pages they read. It is cookieless, it does not fingerprint your device, it does not build a profile of you, and it cannot follow you to other websites. We see totals, not people.

There is no Google Analytics here, no advertising network, and no tracking pixel of any kind.

What stays on your own device.

The player remembers two small things in your browser's local storage. Neither is ever sent to us or to anyone else:

  • Where you stopped. So an episode can pick up where it left off.
  • Whether you have visited before. A single yes or no, used only so the offer to add the site to your home screen is never shown to a first-time visitor.

Clearing your browser data removes both. This site sets no cookies at all. The fonts are served from our own site rather than a font network, so loading a page does not tell a third party you were here.

When you leave the site.

Some links take you somewhere we do not control, and once you arrive their privacy policy applies rather than ours. That includes the audio itself, which streams from our podcast host's content network, along with Stripe if you make a gift, Gumroad if you buy episodes, and Apple, Spotify, YouTube, Audible, iHeart, Yoto, Patreon, Amazon, and Google Play if you follow us there.

The app

The Bedtime Scientist app.

The Android app has no accounts and no sign-in, and it contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking software of any kind.

Your listening state, meaning favorites, playback progress, and your Up Next queue, is stored only in the app's private storage on your device. It is never uploaded or synced to a server. Deleting the app removes it.

The app uses the internet for two things: fetching the current episode list so the library stays up to date, and streaming audio when you press play. Both are anonymous and one-way, with no account or identifier attached. As with any internet request, our hosting and delivery providers process limited technical information such as your device's IP address in order to deliver what was asked for and keep the service secure. We do not use it to identify you or build a profile.

Children

Children's privacy.

The Bedtime Scientist is made for children to listen to and for a parent or caregiver to operate. The only parts of this site that collect anything, the newsletter and the contact form, are intended for adults.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us their information, write to us and we will delete it promptly. Because the show requires no account and the app collects nothing, there is normally nothing about a child for us to hold in the first place.

Your choices, and changes to this policy.

Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. You can clear anything stored on your device by clearing your browser data or deleting the app. You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, at any time.

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page, and for anything material we will say so on the site.

Questions about any of this, or a request to delete something, can go to thebedtimescientist@gmail.com, or through the contact form.
