Dinosaur Fossils: How Scientists Tell Time

The big idea
A fossil is a very old bone that slowly turned into stone. When a dinosaur was buried in mud long ago, minerals crept in over millions of years and replaced the bone, bit by bit, until it became rock, shaped exactly like the bone.
Fossils are usually found in layers of rock, stacked like the pages of a book. The deeper you dig, the older the layers, so digging down is like reading backward in time.
Most animals never become fossils at all, everything has to line up just right. So every fossil a scientist finds is a rare, lucky page from Earth's very long diary.

Layers of Time
You'll need
- A clear jar or glass
- Layers of different things (sand, soil, oats, flour)
- A few small 'fossils' (beads or beans)
What to do
- Pour in a layer of one material, then drop in a small 'fossil' bead, and cover it with the next layer.
- Keep building: layer, fossil, layer, fossil, so each treasure sits at its own depth.
- Look at the side of the jar, the newest layer is on top, the oldest at the bottom.
- Now 'excavate' from the top down and notice: the deeper you dig, the older the fossil you reach.

Spot it in real life
- Look at a cliff or road cut and count the stripes, each is a layer of time.
- Press a shell or leaf into playdough to make an 'imprint fossil.'
- Notice tree rings on a cut log, another way nature keeps a record of time.
- Visit a museum or look online at a real dinosaur skeleton and find the biggest bone.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Time moves slower in rocks than anywhere you know, layer settling gently onto layer, page onto page, over millions of quiet years. Tonight can be slow like that too. Let today become just one thin, finished page, pressed softly beneath your blanket over your sheet over you. For ages 7–10
The big idea
Fossils form when a buried organism's hard parts are slowly infiltrated and replaced by minerals from groundwater, turning bone into stone over thousands to millions of years while preserving its shape. It's rare, most remains decay or are scattered first.
Rock layers, or strata, record time. By the principle of superposition, lower layers are generally older than the ones above, so a sequence of rock is a stacked timeline. Fossils found in a layer date to when that layer formed.
Scientists combine this with other clues, index fossils that mark known periods, and radiometric dating of certain rocks, to build a precise calendar of deep time. A dig site is less a graveyard than an archive.

- Bone becomes stone without losing its shape. How can something be replaced atom by atom and still look the same?
- Superposition says deeper is older, usually. What could disturb the order (earthquakes, folding) and confuse it?
- Most organisms never fossilize. What does that mean for how complete the fossil record can be?
- An 'index fossil' marks a time period wherever it's found. What makes a species useful for that?

You'll need
- A tall clear jar
- Several dry materials (sand, flour, coffee grounds, oats)
- Small 'index fossils' (two colors of beads)
What to do
- Build layers, and in two of them, bury a distinctive bead 'index fossil,' one color per layer.
- Add an event: gently tilt and tap the jar to 'fold' or offset a layer, like real geology.
- Swap jars with someone and, from the outside, work out the order of events and which fossils are oldest.
- Check by 'excavating.' Notice how the index beads let you match up layers even where they've shifted.
