Jupiter: A World Made of Sky
The expanded guide to the Jupiter episode, the same calm science, opened up into something you can do together. Each lane has its own big idea, questions, a hands-on experiment, science words, and a printable to keep.
For ages 4–6
The big idea
Jupiter is the biggest planet in our whole family of planets. It is so huge that every other planet could fit inside it, all together, with room left over.
But here's the strange part: you could never land on Jupiter, because it has no ground. It's made almost entirely of sky. If you tried to stand on it, you'd just keep sinking through thicker and thicker cloud, down and down.
Jupiter also has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot. It's bigger than our whole planet, and it has been swirling round and round for hundreds of years, longer than anyone can remember.

A Storm in a Jar
You'll need
- A clear jar of water
- A drop of dish soap
- A little food coloring or a pinch of glitter
- A spoon
What to do
- Fill the jar with water and add a small drop of coloring or a pinch of glitter.
- Stir the water round and round with the spoon, then lift the spoon out.
- Watch the little swirling storm keep spinning on its own for a while after you stop.
- Add one drop of dish soap and watch the swirl change. Jupiter's storms swirl like this, but they never hit any land to slow them, so they can spin for hundreds of years.

- The biggest planet in our solar system, made almost entirely of sky, with no ground to stand on.

- A big round world that circles the Sun. Jupiter is the largest of them all.

Spot it in real life
- On a clear night, ask a grown-up to help you find Jupiter, it's one of the brightest 'stars,' and it doesn't twinkle.
- Stir a cup of cocoa and watch the swirl keep turning after you lift the spoon, a tiny Jupiter storm.
- Blow gently across a bowl of water to make bands of ripples, Jupiter's clouds form stripes like that.
- Hold up a pea next to a beach ball. That's a little like Earth next to Jupiter.
Read this one aloud, slowly
Far out in space, the biggest planet is turning slowly in the dark, its great storm swirling round and round the way it has for longer than anyone can remember, needing no one to watch it. You don't have to watch it either. You have a floor under your feet and soft walls around you, and everything that needs to keep turning tonight can turn all by itself. Breathe in slowly… and let it out. Let the giant spin far away, and let yourself grow still.
For ages 7–10
The big idea
Earth is a ball of rock with a thin skin of air. Jupiter is the reverse: overwhelmingly sky. It's made mostly of hydrogen and helium, the two lightest ingredients in the universe, and it is by far the largest planet, more massive than all the others put together.
There is no surface, no line where sky becomes ground. As you go down, the air just gets thicker and hotter and heavier, until the pressure is so crushing that the hydrogen stops acting like a gas and begins to flow like a liquid metal, deep in the dark.
Two more surprises. First, Jupiter spins faster than any other planet, one full turn in about ten hours, which smears its clouds into those famous stripes. Second, its Great Red Spot is a storm wider than Earth. On our planet storms die when they cross land; Jupiter has no land, so this one has been spinning for at least a couple of centuries.
Wonder together
- Jupiter is made of the lightest ingredients in the universe, yet it's the heaviest planet. How can 'made of light stuff' and 'the most massive' both be true?

Investigate it
Bands of a Spinning World
You'll need
- A wide, shallow bowl of water
- A little milk or cream
- A few drops of food coloring
- A toothpick
What to do
- Fill the bowl and let the water go completely still.
- Add a ring of small color drops around the middle, then gently spin the water with the toothpick in one direction.
- Watch the colors stretch into bands and swirls that line up with the spin, the way Jupiter's fast rotation stretches its clouds into stripes.
- Nudge one swirl to keep it going, and see how long it lasts before the bowl's edges slow it. Jupiter has no edges to do that.

- Gas giant
- A huge planet made mostly of gas, with no solid surface. Jupiter and Saturn are the big two.
- Hydrogen & helium
- The two lightest, most common elements in the universe, and what Jupiter is mostly made of.
- Pressure
- How hard something is being pressed. Deep in Jupiter it's crushing enough to change how matter behaves.
- Metallic hydrogen
- Hydrogen squeezed so hard, deep inside Jupiter, that it flows like a liquid metal and helps make the planet's magnetic field.
- Rotation
- The spin of a planet. Jupiter's is the fastest of all, one turn in about ten hours.
- Great Red Spot
- A storm on Jupiter wider than Earth, spinning for at least a couple of hundred years.
Spot it in real life
- Find Jupiter in the night sky (a stargazing app helps). Through binoculars you may spot its four biggest moons in a little line.
- Watch cream swirl into coffee, then hold still: turbulence and bands, the same physics that paints Jupiter.
- Spin a merry-go-round or a desk chair and notice how things streak outward, a hint of how rotation shapes cloud bands.
- Compare Saturn and Jupiter in photos, both gas giants, both striped, close cousins in how they're built.

Challenge: Sketch Jupiter's bands and its Great Red Spot from a photo, then note two ways it differs from Earth. On the diagram, draw arrows for the fast east-west winds and mark where the gas thickens toward liquid metal deep inside.
Journal: Jupiter is huge and powerful and turns away out there without needing anyone to manage it. Write about something big in your life that you can let keep turning tonight without watching over it.

You don't have to hold anything up tonight either. Your room has a floor and edges and a door, exactly the right size to rest in. Breathe in… and out. Let the giant turn far away in the dark, and let yourself settle, small and safe and still, until morning.

Jupiter is made of a color sky that just gets thicker the deeper you go, with no ground anywhere. Down and down a name floated, past a big number swirling stripes of cloud, going "a sound" past the Great Red Spot, a a describing word storm bigger than the whole Earth that has been a silly action (ends in -ing) for hundreds of years. a name decided a picnic of a food was better enjoyed floating, since there was nowhere at all to sit down.

Make it a Family Science Night

The plan
- Pick a night and invite one other family. Send a text, or hand a child the placemat below to deliver.
- Set out the few things the experiment needs.
- Start the episode together, then try the experiment while it's fresh.
- Let the kids lead. Grown-ups just wonder out loud alongside them.
- End calm: dim the lights and read the bedtime tie-back aloud to everyone.

The grown-up's 60 seconds
Jupiter rearranges your sense of scale. It isn't a bigger Earth; it's a different kind of thing, a planet with no floor, where 'landing' has no meaning and the weather is measured in centuries. The Great Red Spot has been spinning since before the telescope was common, a storm you could drop the whole Earth into. For a child, it's the thrill of the biggest and strangest thing there is. For the grown-up, there's an odd comfort in it: a reminder that enormous, powerful things can turn away out there indefinitely, entirely indifferent to us, while our own small, solid, well-lit room stays exactly the right size to rest in.
