How Does a Lighthouse Work?

At the edge of the ocean, in the dark, there is a tall stone building with a room of glass at the top, and inside that room a light that goes around. This episode is about what the light is doing, and about the rings of glass that turned a small flame into something a ship could see from twenty miles away.

The science, gently

  • A light on its own goes in every direction at once, so most of it heads up into the empty sky or down into the water. Rings of glass around the lamp catch the wasted parts and bend them flat, out toward the horizon.
  • Every lighthouse is given its own pattern of flashes, called its character. Charts list them all, so someone out on dark water can count what they are looking at, look it up, and know exactly where they are.
  • The light at Pigeon Point in California has flashed once every ten seconds for more than a hundred and twenty-five years, and it keeps doing it on nights when there is nobody on the water at all.
