The first underground railway

January 10, 1863

On this day in 1863, the world's first underground railway opened in London, running through a tunnel beneath the city streets. Its trains were pulled by steam engines, and in its very first year millions of people rode it.

Why it mattered

Cities all over the world have built underground trains since then, so people can travel beneath busy streets instead of through them.

Wonder together

If you could dig a tunnel under your town, where would you want it to go?
