Stars on a ceiling

October 21, 1923

On this day in 1923, at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, a new machine was shown filling the inside of a dome with thousands of stars. It was the world's first planetarium projector.

Why it mattered

People could finally see a clear night sky indoors, whenever they liked, even in a city full of lights or on a cloudy evening.

Wonder together

If you could put any stars you like on your ceiling, what shapes would you make?
