The Bedtime Scientist

On this night in science

A new room for the space station

October 23, 2007

On this day in 2007, the space shuttle Discovery launched with Harmony, a new room for the International Space Station. When it arrived, both the shuttle and the station were led by women, Pam Melroy and Peggy Whitson, for the first time.

Why it mattered

Harmony became a hallway and meeting point on the station, and new science labs from Europe and Japan were later attached to it.

Wonder together

If you could add a new room to a space station, what would you put in it?
