The Erie Canal opens
October 26, 1825
On this day in 1825, the Erie Canal opened in New York. It was a waterway 363 miles long, dug across the state, so boats could travel all the way from Lake Erie to the Hudson River and on to the ocean.
Why it mattered
The canal made it much easier to move people and goods. Towns and cities grew up along its route, and it helped hundreds more towns get started farther west.
Wonder together
How do you think a boat could climb up a hill?
