The Bedtime Scientist

On this night in science

The first message on the network that became the internet

October 29, 1969

On this night in 1969, a student at a university in Los Angeles tried to send the word “login” to a computer hundreds of miles away. Only the first two letters, L and O, arrived before the system stopped, and that little “lo” was the first message on the network that grew into the internet.

Why it mattered

For the first time, computers far apart could send messages to each other. That small network kept growing, and today it connects billions of people.

Wonder together

If you could send just two letters to someone far away, which two would you pick?
